The Impulse Impact Tamper from the Espresso Series by Timemore combines a spring system for even tamping pressure with a collar that keeps the base straight in the 58 mm basket.

Spring-driven Impact mechanism

Springs inside deliver a powerful tamp and then return the tamper to its starting position with an audible snap. That way, the pressure depends less on how hard you happen to be pressing on that particular morning.

Designed for more than 60 000 tamps

Timemore designs the mechanism for more than 60 000 tamps (manufacturer's specification).

Large self-leveling collar

A fixed collar rests on the rim of the basket and keeps the tamper flat and centered in the basket, so that every tamp comes out equally straight.

All-metal components

The handle is made of anodized aluminum, the base of precision-milled stainless steel, built for long use.

Precision in motion

A finely tuned spring system guides every tamp in three steps: Impact delivers stable, concentrated tamping pressure, Reset automatically returns the tamper to its starting position, and Stabilize keeps it upright in the basket.

Consistent, no matter who tamps

Timemore had 16 shots pulled with identical parameters – VST basket, 18 g of coffee, 30 g in the glass – prepared by two people with very different amounts of barista experience. According to the manufacturer, the flow rate differed by less than 0.1 g per second. That is a manufacturer's measurement, not an independent one, but it shows what this is all about: consistency.

Why evenness counts for more than force

Particle size and uniformity determine the quality of the extraction, and the tamper holds that uniformity in place. Water always takes the path of least resistance; a puck tamped straight, and in much the same way every time, offers it the same path everywhere. More force doesn't make better espresso; repeatable pressure makes it more predictable.

No espresso laws, no espresso police: the coffee has to taste good, and we measure by weight, never by time alone. We grind fine, start at 14.5 g and work our way up, usually to 17 g, at a ratio below 1:2. No shot can be replicated – the bean, the humidity and the person change every day. Our opinion is one of many.

The details in everyday use

Two bases, automatic return

The flat base leaves the coffee bed level, while the ripple base presses concentric grooves into the puck. Each variant comes with one base. Two springs bring the tamper back before your hand has let go of it.

Fine tolerances, wide contact surface

Between the tamper and the body there is a gap of less than 0.05 mm. This keeps it stable and prevents mechanical play from developing over time. The 69 mm wide contact surface rests broadly on the basket and provides balance and control.

Matching silicone mat

The mat included in the box protects the tamper from wear, and its wavy shape catches fine particles.

Ergonomic design

Anodized aluminum, soft contours and a rounded top add up to a handle that sits naturally in the hand.

Anti-vacuum chamfer

A chamfer on the lower edge of the base breaks the vacuum as you lift. The tamper comes away cleanly, and the puck stays exactly as it is.

At around 640 g, the tamper sits solidly in the hand. Design and feel influence your enjoyment before the first sip arrives, and black or white is not a technical decision but one for your counter. Which base appeals to you more is a matter of eye and feel; both work. Nobody needs a spring-loaded tamper – you want one or you don't.
