Varia Calibre Tamper 58 mm – self-levelling impact tamper with four force settings
The Varia Calibre Tamper 58 mm tamps with a spring impulse at a fixed setting: 15, 20, 25 or 30 kg, readable in the viewing window. Self-levelling, in six colours.
You place the tamper on the basket and press the handle. A short impulse, and the coffee bed is compressed. On the next shot, your chosen setting is still there. The Calibre comes in Black, White, Silver, Sand, Ruby and Forest.
Functions
Visible setting, internal impact mechanism
You hold the base and rotate the handle to adjust the spring preload. Detents mark the four settings 15, 20, 25 and 30, and the selected number appears in the viewing window. Pressing the handle loads the spring and releases an internal impact block against the tamping base. Releasing the handle resets the mechanism without changing the setting. The 58 mm base leaves a concentric ring pattern on the coffee bed, which according to Varia is designed to distribute water more evenly across and through the coffee bed.
The details in everyday use
Select the setting by rotating the handle and check it in the viewing window. After distributing, seat the self-levelling tamper on the basket and press to trigger the impulse. Releasing resets it. According to Varia, the self-levelling design helps keep the base parallel to the basket. Between shots, the tamper rests on the included silicone protective base.
With a fixed tamping setting, one variable stays the same and the rest of the recipe can move. We work by weight, not by time. We grind fine, start at 14.5 g and work our way up, usually to 17 g, at a ratio below 1:2. Our opinion is one of many.
Concentric tamping base
The 58 mm base carries a concentric ring pattern that shows on the coffee bed when you tamp.

Frequently asked questions about the Varia Calibre Tamper
Do I have to reset the setting after every tamp?
No. The mechanism resets when you release it, and the selected setting stays in place. You only rotate when you want a different setting.
How do I set the force setting?
You hold the base and rotate the handle. Detents mark the four settings 15, 20, 25 and 30 kg, and you see the selected number in the viewing window.
Does the Calibre Tamper fit other baskets too?
The Calibre has a 58 mm base. Whether it fits your basket cleanly depends on the inner diameter of your basket. Varia lists it in the ORBI line.
What’s in the box?
The Calibre Tamper and a silicone protective base it stands on between shots.
Can I see the product before buying?
Yes, you can see the Varia ORBI live at our showrooms in Bern and Zurich. Not every accessory is on site at all times, so ask beforehand at [email protected].
Roastery tip: If you work with a fixed tamping setting, you notice differences between beans more clearly. For espresso, we like to use Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight, dense and chocolatey, and for maximum body without acidity Very Nutty. That’s our recommendation, one of many.
