What the spring set does – and why it's important
4 Premium Chamber Springs: These springs sit directly under the outer burr in the VS3's grinding chamber. They keep the outer burr stable and centered under load, dampen vibrations during the grinding process, and absorb the shocks that occur when grinding hard beans (especially light roasts).
Why this is relevant for your coffee: If the springs lose their tension, the outer burr moves minimally under load. This changes the effective distance between the inner and outer burrs – and thus the particle size – during a single grinding process. You'll notice it because your shots run more inconsistently, even though you haven't changed the grind setting.
Installation: Unscrew hopper → remove outer ring → lift out burr → remove four old springs → insert four new springs → reassemble in reverse order → recalibrate grind setting. No special tools needed, takes approx. 10 minutes. After replacement, you will need to readjust your grind setting – this is normal and part of the process.

A tight, unimodal distribution (the goal) means: all particles have a similar surface area and extract evenly. You extract the desired compounds – sugars, organic acids, Maillard products – without simultaneously over-extracting unwanted bitter compounds (chlorogenic acid degradation products, higher molecular weight polyphenols) from the fines.
When the burr vibrates, more outliers are created in the PSD – both fines (over-extraction → bitterness, astringency) and boulders (under-extraction → acidity, watery body). New springs eliminate this mechanical variance and return the VS3 to its characteristic tight distribution. The difference is particularly noticeable with light roasts, where the line between vibrant acidity and unpleasant sharpness is razor-thin.
