Weber Workshops HG-2 MK II – 83mm Conical Hand Grinder

You take the crank in your hand and feel the weight of the grinder on the counter – nothing wobbles, nothing slips. The first turn is easy, then you shift into second gear and the beans give way smoothly, without jerking. No motor, no electricity, just the quiet crunch of the 83mm burrs and the calm turning in your hand. You grind directly into the Magic Tumbler, pull it off, tap it out. A brief moment for yourself, every morning, before the first shot runs.

The Weber Workshops HG-2 is Weber Workshops' manual grinder – the successor to the HG-1, redesigned from the ground up. In the MK II, it incorporates the innovations of the KEY Mk.2: an integrated Bean Feeder, a new bottom bearing, around 30% more loading capacity, and an improved Magic Tumbler. Inside, the same 83mm Mazzer burr set works as in the Key – the largest conical burr set available for home and cafe use. Coffee Coaching Club is the exclusive Swiss importer for Weber Workshops.

What makes the HG-2 special

The heart of the HG-2 is an 83mm Mazzer burr set, factory-aligned, partially pre-aged, and sealed with a food-safe TiN coating (titanium nitride, applied using the PVD process). The burr set is designed for a throughput of 5,000 kg. The same burrs are found in the electric Key – if you like the conical character, you get it here by hand.

What's special about the HG-2 is a self-developed 2-speed gearbox – the first of its kind in a hand grinder. In first gear, the effort required is halved, making it easy to grind even light, dense roasts by hand. Conical burrs rotate slowly and generate little frictional heat, which protects volatile aromas. In the cup, the conical character reveals itself through body, texture, and a dense sweetness – the classic, rounded espresso profile. Grinding by hand also means: no motor noise, no electricity, and a short, quiet moment that can become a ritual.

What's new about the MK II

In the MK II, the Bean Feeder is permanently installed and doses the beans evenly, while a new bottom bearing maintains alignment. The loading chamber holds about 30% more than before. The improved Magic Tumbler distributes the grounds using an anti-static wiper based on the WDT principle, often making the Ross Droplet Technique unnecessary. When purchasing, you choose between the Magic Tumbler (for 58mm portafilters) and the standard cup with funnel (for 49 and 58 mm).

Who is the HG-2 MK II for?

The HG-2 MK II is for everyone who wants to grind by hand – without a motor, without electricity, with the conical character of an 83mm Mazzer burr set. For everyone who enjoys the quiet morning moment, and for everyone who doesn't want to compromise on their grind quality, even when on the go.

Nobody needs the HG-2. You want it – or you don't. As with a car, in the end, it's not the measurement curve that decides, but the feel of the crank in your hand and what a grinder made of solid material radiates on the counter. If you prefer the same burr set electrically, you'll find it in the Key. If you prefer clarity over body, a flat burr grinder is a better choice. Both are valid – burr sets are like engines in cars. If you want it, you know why. That's our view, one of many.

What goes with it

The HG-2 grinds for any preparation. With an espresso machine, it pairs well with the La Marzocco. If you want the same 83mm Mazzer burr set electrically, you'll find the Key in our Weber Workshops Collection. If you're looking for an affordable hand grinder: the Comandante C40 or the Timemore hand grinders – both precise and travel-friendly.

For dosing by weight: the affordable Normcore scales (exclusive Swiss importer), with app and flow rate display the Acaia (Swiss importer). For tamping: the Normcore tampers or, if you want more, the Weber Workshops tamper. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs mineral concentrates (exclusive Swiss importer).

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the HG-2 differ from the electric Key?

Both use the same 83mm Mazzer burr set and deliver the same conical character. You grind the HG-2 by hand – quietly, without electricity, with a 2-speed gearbox. The Key grinds electrically with variable speed. It's about workflow and feel, not better or worse.

What does the 2-speed gearbox offer?

The self-developed 2-speed gearbox is the first of its kind in a hand grinder. In first gear, the effort required is halved, allowing even light, dense roasts to be ground effortlessly by hand.

How does a conical burr set differ from a flat burr set?

Conical burrs tend to produce more body and texture with a dense, classic espresso character. Flat burrs tend to produce more clarity and aroma separation. There is no better or worse – it's a matter of taste.

Which portafilters is the Magic Tumbler suitable for?

The Magic Tumbler is designed for 58mm portafilters and automatically applies WDT distribution via a built-in wiper. For 49mm baskets, there is the standard cup with funnel.

Are the burrs interchangeable with the Key?

Yes. The HG-2 uses the same 83mm Mazzer burr set as the electric Key. The Magic Tumbler also fits Key, HG-1, and HG-2.

Can I see the HG-2 MK II before purchasing?

Yes. In the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), you can hold the HG-2 in your hand. The weight, the smooth operation of the gearbox, and the haptics cannot be conveyed through photos. You are welcome to bring your own beans.

How quickly will the HG-2 be delivered in Switzerland?

2 to 4 business days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect is possible in Bern and Zurich. Financing available via Heylight.

Roaster's Tip

When hand-ground, the HG-2 shows the same dense, full-bodied character as the Key. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight run smooth and deep on it. For maximum body without acidity: Very Nutty. For light, dense beans like our Wild Peach, the first gear is worthwhile – grinding is easy, and the gentle conical burrs bring the peach note vividly into the cup. This is our recommendation, one of many.
