Weber Workshops Spring Clean (Transparent) – backflush tool for 58 mm
The Weber Workshops Spring Clean flushes 200 ml of water back through the brew group and 3-way valve per cycle, visible in the transparent housing.
The Spring Clean locks into the brew group like a portafilter. While the pump runs, a spring-loaded reservoir fills with 200 ml of water. When you stop the pump, the spring pushes the entire volume back through the brew line, via the 3-way solenoid valve, into the drip tray. According to Weber Workshops, that is around twenty times the amount of water of a conventional backflush per cycle. Coffee Coaching Club is the official Swiss importer of Weber Workshops.
How the Spring Clean works
Lock it in like a portafilter and turn it firmly so the gasket seals. The lugs are made of plastic, so no excessive force. If needed, cleaner goes on top of the piston. Then start the pump until water squirts out of the overflow opening, and stop the pump. The backflush takes a few seconds. Then wait another 10 seconds until the pressure is at 0, and remove the Spring Clean carefully. Weber recommends a rubber glove for this, as hot water comes out.

Safety valve
For the transparent version, Weber Workshops developed its own safety valve made entirely of stainless steel. It opens at 1 bar and so keeps the 9 to 12 bar of pump pressure away from the lugs.
Backflush cleaner
The Spring Clean is designed for common backflush cleaners; Weber names Joe Glo, Cafiza, Urnex and baking soda. One cycle with cleaner dissolves the coffee oils, then rinse and run one cycle with clean water. Through the transparent housing you can see when the water stays clear.
Overflow channel
Once the water chamber is full during charging, an overflow channel directs the excess water straight down into the drip tray. The dirty water stays where it belongs, and the pump and lines do not run at full pressure against a resistance.
Switching beans
If you pull different coffees one after another, according to Weber a short pass of clean water flushes the oil residue of the previous bean out of the line, without a full cleaning in between.

Care
Over time, coffee residue and oils can collect in the Spring Clean. If the inside becomes stained or the piston moves stiffly, take out the retaining spring and piston assembly and clean them by hand. Do not take the safety valve apart. Weber advises not to leave the Spring Clean locked into the machine and not to store it on the cup warmer, so that rubber and plastic parts do not age prematurely.
Who it is made for
For everyone with a 58 mm portafilter machine with backflush function, at home as well as in a café. Before buying, check whether your machine uses E61-compatible portafilters. If not, the Spring Clean does not fit, according to Weber. Machines without a 3-way valve generally cannot be backflushed. Does the Spring Clean fit my machine?
It fits 58 mm machines that use E61-compatible portafilters and have a pump with backflush function. According to Weber Workshops, that means all E61 brew groups, all La Marzocco except KB90, and Decent. Not suitable are Bezzera BZ brew groups, Gaggia Classic Pro and Breville / Sage.
How often should I backflush?
We recommend a backflush with clean water daily and an additional pass with cleaner roughly every 50 shots.
Which cleaner can I use?
Common backflush cleaners such as Cafiza, Urnex or Joe Glo, and according to Weber also baking soda. One cycle with cleaner, rinse, then one cycle with clean water.
What is the difference from the metal Spring Clean?
The transparent Spring Clean has a nylon housing through which you can see the cleaning process, and its own stainless steel safety valve. The metal Spring Clean is the stainless steel version. You will find both in our Weber Workshops Collection.
Does the Spring Clean replace servicing by a technician?
No. It cleans the brew line and 3-way valve with considerably more water than a conventional backflush. Seals, pump and boiler still need servicing as specified by the machine manufacturer.

Tip from the roastery: Old coffee oils in the brew group and line settle over the aroma of the fresh bean. A short pass of clean water when switching between Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight and Very Nutty keeps the aromas apart.
