The grounds fall straight down into the magnetic dosing cup, and a built-in Dose Finisher catches the last few crumbs. What's left behind is close to nothing. Single dose in, single dose out.
The Philos is the first single-dose grinder from Mazzer and brings over 75 years of experience from Scorzè near Venice into a compact housing – built for anyone who switches between espresso, filter and batch brew without purging between beans. As a partner of Mazzer, we carry the Philos in two housing colors.
The flat burrs are mounted vertically. Together with the auger feed, they guide the beans evenly into the burrs – this reduces popcorning and ensures a consistent particle distribution.
Because the grounds fall straight down following gravity, almost nothing gets caught: under half a gram, and with the vertical burrs down to around 0.1 grams. What you grind today isn't mixed with yesterday.
In stepped mode, the setting clicks into fine 6-micron increments and stays repeatable; in stepless mode, you adjust continuously. Espresso in the morning, pour-over in the afternoon – without losing your espresso setting.
The 58 mm dosing cup clicks magnetically into place beneath the outlet, and the built-in Dose Finisher taps out the last crumbs cleanly.
Front plate off magnetically, loosen two thumbscrews by hand, remove the burrs – no recalibration needed afterward.
The motor runs at low frequency, a damping design reduces vibration, and an anti-static design keeps the work surface clean. The power cable disappears into its own compartment.
The Philos works with 64 mm flat burrs, available in two factory-run-in profiles made from food-safe stainless steel. Both suit espresso as well as filter; they simply set different accents:
Designed for clarity in the cup: clearly separated fruit and floral notes, balanced, pleasant acidity and medium body. Ideal for light to medium roasts and filter.
Designed for a full, velvety mouthfeel: rich body, deep sweetness, notes of chocolate and nut. Ideal for classic Italian espresso and medium to dark roasts.
Switching between the profiles takes just a few minutes, tool-free; the burrs are also available individually in our Mazzer collection – flat burrs generate more heat at the same speed than conical ones; Mazzer has tuned the motor and speed profile to single-dose quantities so the temperature stays stable – you're grinding 18 grams, not a full hopper.

Vertically mounted 64 mm flat burrs with auger feed, two burr profiles (I200D and I189D), close to zero retention down to around 0.1 grams, dual-mode adjustment with 6-micron increments or stepless, magnetic 58 mm dosing cup with built-in Dose Finisher, tool-free access to the grinding chamber without recalibration, 400 W asynchronous motor with low operating frequency, anti-static and damping design, plus a housing of stainless steel, brass and anodized aluminum with a stable footprint of around 12.5 kg.
The Philos is for anyone who wants single-dosing and prefers the taste of flat burrs – clarity and texture at once – while switching between espresso, filter and batch brew without purging. With espresso, there's no "right" or "wrong": grind size, dose and ratio are the dials you use to find your taste. A common starting point is 1:2, roughly 18 g of ground coffee to around 36 g of espresso. Anyone who instead pulls many shots throughout the day from a filled bean hopper and wants Grind-by-Weight will find the matching hopper models in our Mazzer collection.
The Philos works with any machine with a 58 mm portafilter – for example from the La Marzocco-, ECM-, Profitec- or Rocket Espresso collection; for lever extraction Flair Espresso. The matching canister for 53 mm and 58 mm portafilters as well as replacement burrs are in the Mazzer collection. For puck prep, a WDT tool from the Normcore range, for airtight storage Airscape and for precise coffee water Apax Labs. Not sure about the combination? Our machine and grinder advisor can help.
The workflow, adjustment and sound level of a single-dose grinder are best experienced hands-on. Come by, we'll show you the Philos in action – bringing your own beans is welcome.

With the I189D burrs, you get a dense, chocolatey, nutty espresso with plenty of body out of Nutty Delight, Cozy Chocolate or Very Nutty – in a cappuccino, this depth carries beautifully through the milk. With the I200D burrs, a lighter, lively profile like Wild Peach or Bright Cassis is worth trying: fruit and delicate acidity come through more clearly. Approach it in small steps. All the beans are in our coffee bean selection. This is our recommendation, one of many.
I200D, if you're after clarity and freshness – light to medium roasts, filter, fruity profiles with pleasant acidity. I189D, if you prefer body and texture – classic espresso, medium to dark roasts and milk drinks. Both are 64 mm flat burrs made by Mazzer and swap tool-free; available individually in our Mazzer collection.
In stepped mode, the adjustment clicks into 6-micron increments so you can reliably find a setting again. In stepless mode, you adjust continuously. The Philos handles both; in everyday use, stepped mode is the most practical for most people.
Close to zero. Thanks to the single-dose principle and the vertical burrs, under half a gram stays behind, and with the Dose Finisher the remainder drops to around 0.1 grams.
Quiet for a grinder of this type. The motor runs at low frequency, a damping design reduces vibration. In the showroom, it runs without disturbing conversation.
The included dosing cup is sized for 58 mm and fits common 58 mm portafilters. For 53 mm portafilters, there's the matching Philos Canister in our Mazzer collection.
