Option-O Lagom Casa – compact single-dose grinder with 65mm Mizen conical burrs

18 grams of beans go straight into the hopper – no lid to remove, no detours. One press of the button. The DC motor spins up through the planetary gearbox, the 65mm Mizen burrs turn at low RPM, the grounds fall straight into the magnetically held Dosing Cup under the outlet. After around 25 seconds, the dose is done. One press of the integrated knocker, the last particles drop, the grinder switches off automatically. Nine centimetres wide, 3.5 kilograms heavy, and still with a manufacturing tolerance under 10 microns on the critical components.

The Lagom Casa answers the question of what a compact single-dose grinder for home can look like – nothing unnecessary, nothing essential left out. Positioned between the smaller Lagom mini 2 and the larger Lagom P80 – same design philosophy, same manufacturing standard, reduced form factor. Designed by Option-O in Australia, manufactured in Taiwan. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of Option-O in Switzerland.

Direct-Load workflow – when single dose really gets simple

Most single-dose grinders have a hopper with a lid: lid off, beans in, lid back on, press the button. The Casa skips that intermediate step. Beans go straight into the opening on top – the grind starts the moment you press the button. At the bottom, the magnetically centred Dosing Cup waits, fitting both portafilters and pour-over setups. A Chute Knocker (a mechanical tapper at the grind chute), a Static Reducer, and the automatic shut-off make sure nothing is left behind and nothing keeps trickling out at the end.

Retention under 0.1 grams per dose – that's the standard single-dose grinders in this price range need to hit for the concept to make sense. Between an espresso bean in the morning and a filter roast in the afternoon, nothing needs flushing.

Mizen 65CL conical burrs – the latest development

The Casa ships with Mizen 65CL conical burrs – the latest in-house developed omni-burrs, built for the full brewing range from fine espresso to coarse French press. Option-O sticks to the industry convention of naming conical burrs by outer diameter – the grinding surface of the 65CL is comparable to classic 63mm conical burrs. Internally, the burrs are shaped so they fit in the same housing as the smaller Mizen 48 variants, which makes a later burr swap easy.

Character in the cup: a balanced profile with medium-high clarity and moderate body. In espresso, the 65CL deliver a clean balance of body, acidity and complexity; in pour-over, a clear aroma separation with noticeable depth. Compared to smaller conical burrs, they bring more nuance and layers of aroma and are also faster – an 18-gram espresso dose takes about 20 to 30 seconds. The Mizen line was deliberately optimised for modern light roasts, but works just as cleanly with medium and darker roasts.

Low-RPM grinding with a planetary gearbox

The Casa deliberately runs at low RPM – a design decision Option-O carries consistently through the whole Lagom family. The DC motor transmits its torque through a planetary gearbox, which delivers even power at low RPM. Less RPM means less friction heat in the grinding chamber, less thermal stress on the volatile aroma compounds, and an overall more even particle distribution with the conical burrs.

The shaft is carried by three bearings (triple-bearing shaft) – that ensures concentric, stable grinding even after years of use. Every critical component is machined to tolerances under 0.01 mm. This is the part you don't see and don't taste right away, but it's what makes the difference when the grinder still delivers the same grind quality after five years as it did on day one.

Stepless adjustment with marking

Grind size is adjusted steplessly via the top dial. Unlike stepped grinders, there are no clicks, just a continuous scale – ideal for micro-adjustments when dialling in espresso. A marking on the dial helps you reliably find a position you've already dialled in. The zero point is calibratable, which allows easy zero-point recalibration after a burr swap or whenever needed.

Who the Lagom Casa is for

The Casa suits home baristas who want a compact single-dose grinder built to a high manufacturing standard – without the effort and price of a flagship grinder like the Lagom P80 or the EG-1. It fits into any kitchen corner, runs quietly and delivers stable results across the full brewing range.

The Casa isn't for everyone. If you're after flagship level with 80mm flat burrs and a Pre-Crushing System: Option-O Lagom P80 or Weber Workshops EG-1. If you're after an even more affordable single-dose alternative: Varia VS3 Gen 2 (exclusive Swiss importer). If you prefer the larger grinding chamber with 63mm conical burrs in a different design language: Varia VS6.

The Casa is the grinder for the home barista who prioritises compactness and a thought-through workflow over maximum grinding surface. If you want it, you know why.

Frequently asked questions

What do the Mizen 65CL burrs taste like?

A balanced profile with medium-high clarity and moderate body. In espresso, a clean balance of body, acidity and complexity; in pour-over, clear aroma separation with noticeable depth. Deliberately developed as omni-burrs – works from very fine espresso to coarse cold brew. Especially strong with modern light roasts, but just as clean with medium and darker roasts.

What's the difference between the Lagom Casa and the Lagom mini 2?

The Lagom mini 2 is the smaller and lighter grinder in the family. The Casa is sturdier, has a stronger motor, a more direct workflow (Direct-Load, no lid), bigger 65mm burrs and a better Static Reducer. Positioned between the mini 2 and the P80. If you want maximum compactness: the mini 2. If you're after a bit more power and flexibility: the Casa.

What's the difference between the Lagom Casa and the Lagom P80?

The Casa has 65mm conical burrs and is built for compactness and a simple workflow. The P80 has 80mm Mizen flat burrs with a Pre-Crushing System, significantly more motor power (500W brushless DC), variable RPM, and is optimised for maximum clarity and flagship performance. Two classes apart in price and effort. For most home barista uses, the Casa is enough. If you want to grind very light roasts at the highest level of clarity, the P80 offers more.

Is the Casa suited for espresso and filter?

Yes. The stepless adjustment covers fine (espresso) to coarse (French press, cold brew). The Mizen 65CL conical burrs are deliberately developed as omni-burrs – so optimised for the whole brewing range. The Dosing Cup is magnetically centred and fits under both portafilters and pour-over setups.

How low is the retention, really?

Under 0.1 grams dynamically, with the integrated clicker at the grind chute. That's enough to switch between different beans without flushing – that's the functional core of single dose.

Can I swap the burrs myself?

Yes. Swapping the burrs requires minimal tools. The 65mm and 48mm Mizen burrs are cross-compatible in the same housing. Replacement burrs are available separately through Option-O.

How loud is the Lagom Casa?

Low RPM combined with the planetary gearbox and the heavy aluminium housing keep the noise at a level that won't wake anyone up in the morning. In the showroom, the Casa runs during tastings without disrupting conversations.

Can I see the Option-O Lagom Casa before buying?

Yes. The Casa is on display in the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Bringing your own beans is explicitly welcome.

How long does delivery take in Switzerland?

2 to 4 working days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and collect in Bern and Zürich possible at any time. Free shipping from CHF 60 order value. Financing through Heylight is possible.

Where can I buy the Option-O Lagom Casa in Switzerland?

At Coffee Coaching Club, partner of Option-O. Via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours or in the showrooms in Bern and Zürich.

Roastery tip

The Casa with the Mizen 65CL burrs is a reliable all-rounder in our showroom. Our Cozy Chocolate develops a dense chocolate sweetness with a soft structure – the low RPM protects the aromas, the 65mm grinding surface gives the profile extra clarity. Nutty Delight works on the Casa as a reliable everyday companion, especially for milk drinks – the nutty sweetness comes through cleanly. Very Nutty is for everyone after maximum body with no acidity, giving you a stable base. If you want to experiment: Wild Peach shows clean clarity in the fruity notes with the omni-burrs, and the peach side comes through clearly. This is our recommendation, one of many.
