Fine stripes run across the handle, calm and even – a subtle look, while the flat base presses the grounds level.
The flat tamper “Stripes” with a striped wooden handle.
The flat stainless steel base presses the grounds into an even layer, so the water flows through the puck evenly instead of finding a quick way through. The tall rim of about two centimetres sits centred on the 58 mm portafilter without slipping when you press, and the handle unscrews for cleaning. The tamper is made in Italy – Metallurgica Motta has been building tools like this since 1967.
Even compaction is the foundation for even extraction – and that, in turn, for a drink that tastes good. Which look you hold in your hand is a matter of taste: the function is the same across all variants, the design is yours to choose. Nobody needs a particular pattern – you want it, or you don't. Our opinion is one of many.

For anyone with a 58 mm portafilter who wants to tamp the coffee evenly – and likes to decide for themselves which look sits on the counter. The flat base is the classic choice for even compaction.
The tamper is part of the puck before the shot: ground evenly in our coffee grinders, brewed on your espresso machine. Our advisor tool helps with the choice.
If you like comparing tampers and accessories: affordable and precise is the Normcore collection, while the Weber Workshops collection shows the especially finely crafted side. You'll find more models in our Tamper collection.
For 58 mm portafilters. The tall rim sits centred and doesn't slip when pressing.
The handle is made of wood with a striped pattern, the base of stainless steel. The handle unscrews for cleaning.
A flat base tamps the grounds evenly, a convex one compresses more toward the centre. There's no right or wrong – many prefer the flat base for even compaction. In the end, what counts is that the cup tastes good.
Very gladly. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can experience it in person.
An evenly tamped puck deserves body-rich beans. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring chocolate and nut notes. For maximum body with no acidity, the Very Nutty, for a fruity experience, the Wild Peach. That's our recommendation – one of many.
