IMS Big Bang Precision Filter Basket 54 mm – h27.5, 18–23 g (for Sage & Breville)
The tallest 54mm variant for Sage and Breville: more coffee mass, more body – and the Big Bang hole pattern that brings sweetness to the forefront. In a bottomless portafilter, a dense, centered extraction.
Nobody needs a special basket for good espresso – the original basket does its job. You want it because the cup becomes sweeter, rounder, and more consistent. This is one of many possible choices, and we respect them both ways.
What makes this basket special
The Big Bang is IMS' latest innovation, here in the 54mm format for Sage and Breville brew groups: 585 holes concentrated towards the center of the basket. This distributes the espresso evenly across the entire surface, prevents channeling, and brings out the sweetness of the coffee while reducing acidity. The basket is ridgeless, designed for bottomless portafilters. At 27.5 mm high, it holds the largest dose in the series (approx. 18–23 g according to the manufacturer). Espresso is extraction based on a weight ratio, usually 1:2; taste and smell are inseparable, a large part arises retronasally. It is our observation that the choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this basket fit my Sage or Breville?
Yes – it is made for 54mm Sage and Breville brew groups, with a 53–53.5mm tamper. Best in a bottomless portafilter.
What dose does the 27.5mm height hold?
According to the manufacturer, around 18–23 g – the largest dose in the 54mm series. The exact value depends on the roast level and grind size; height is the most reliable indicator.
What roast is the Big Bang suitable for?
Medium to darker roasts come out particularly well. With very light, citrusy coffees, it's worth experimenting a bit – the Big Bang deliberately reduces acidity.
Can I see the basket before buying?
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b).
Roastery Tip
The Big Bang emphasizes sweetness and reduces acidity – perfect for full-bodied roasts. From our coffee roastery, Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight, and – for maximum body without any acidity – Very Nutty are particularly suitable. Those looking for the fruity side of lighter roasts will find the Big Bang less to their liking – honestly speaking. Our recommendation, one of many.
