Comandante C40 MK4 Lab Series Nitro Blade – hand grinder in Stone-Washed stainless steel
Cool steel in your palm, matte and marked like a pebble from a stream. Then the crank, a calm, steady run – and the scent of freshly ground coffee.
After a few turns, the aroma rises from the jar, and this is exactly where flavour begins. A large part of what we experience as aroma arises retronasally: as you swallow, volatile compounds travel through the throat to the olfactory mucosa. Coffee brings over 800 of them, more than wine. Freshly ground, they are at their most vivid – which makes the moment at the grinder more than just preparation.
What makes the Lab Series Nitro Blade special
The Comandante C40 MK4 Lab Series Nitro Blade from our Comandante Collection brings two things together: the original Nitro Blade® burr set and the Lab Series stainless steel housing in a Stone-Washed finish. The body bears the lettering “Nitro Blade Burr” and the Lab Series emblem, and the oak knob is lacquered black.
Comandante founder Bernd Braune has been developing conical burr sets for over ten years, today in-house at the Bavarian Burr Lab. Comandante sees the Lab Series as an invitation to experiment with the geometry of the burr set. Nitro Blade, Tigershark and Hammerhead all sit in the same C40 MK4 – each with its own signature. The Nitro Blade is the original: Comandante introduced the C40 MK3 with it in 2015, and the manufacturer itself calls it the “Original Game Changer”.
The burr set is made of Nitro Rex®, a stainless steel from the Alpine region with over 17 percent chromium as well as vanadium and molybdenum. According to the manufacturer, the silvery-white surface needs no coating and is flavour-neutral. Why that matters: particle size and uniformity determine how the water dissolves the compounds from the coffee. Fine particles release them faster, coarse ones more slowly. The more uniform the grounds, the rounder the aroma profile – dense, sweet, with chocolate and nut in the foreground and a long finish, if the bean brings that with it.
You set the grind size below the burr set using a stepped click adjustment, from fine for espresso to coarse for French press. If you'd like even finer steps, you'll find the Red Clix axle among the Comandante accessories.
A tool you enjoy picking up
Design and feel shape your enjoyment even before the first sip – perception is never just taste, it is always hand, eye and ear too. And dopamine doesn't rise only once the coffee is in the cup, but already in the anticipation – while cranking, with the scent, in the quiet before the first pour.
The Lab Series grinds with the same Nitro Blade® burr set as the classic C40 MK4 Nitro Blade. What sets it apart is the feeling when you pick it up: raw, marked metal instead of paint or veneer. Nobody needs it. You want it, or you don't – and whoever wants it knows why. Our opinion is one of many, but especially with the ritual of grinding, we find: the tool you enjoy touching is also the one you happily pick up every morning.

Who the Lab Series Nitro Blade is for
For anyone who wants to grind fresh and by hand – in the kitchen, at the office, while travelling. For anyone picking up a hand grinder for the first time, and for anyone who already owns a Comandante and would like a second one for a different bean or a different place. For anyone who loves filter coffee, and for anyone who grinds espresso by hand.
And for anyone choosing between the three Lab Series burr sets: the Nitro Blade is the familiar, versatile choice with which Comandante built its reputation. As a partner of Comandante, we carry the Lab Series in Switzerland – you can buy the grinder online and have it delivered throughout Switzerland, or pick it up in Bern or Zurich.
What pairs well with it
For brewing: for anyone who wants affordable, precise pour-over, the Hario V60 from our Hario Collection. If you want a statement on the counter, you'll find the BIRD at Weber Workshops.
For weighing: for anyone who wants an affordable, precise scale, the models from our Normcore Collection. If you want an app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth: Acaia.
For pouring: a gooseneck kettle like the Hario Buono gives you a calm, fine stream. If you want to set the water temperature via PID control, you'll find the AURA in our Varia Collection. Red Clix, wooden knobs and replacement bean jars are in the Comandante Collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Lab Series Nitro Blade and the classic C40 MK4 Nitro Blade?
Both grind with the original Nitro Blade® burr set made of Nitro Rex® steel. The difference lies in the look: the Lab Series comes in a stainless steel body with a Stone-Washed finish and Lab Series engraving, while we carry the classic C40 MK4 Nitro Blade in various colour and wood versions. You'll find both in our Comandante Collection.
How do Nitro Blade, Tigershark and Hammerhead differ?
All three belong to the Comandante Lab Series and sit in the C40 MK4. They differ in the geometry of the burr set, developed in the Bavarian Burr Lab. Nitro Blade is the original burr set with which Comandante introduced the C40 MK3 in 2015. Tigershark and Hammerhead are geometries of their own, each with its own character. It's not a hierarchy, but a choice based on what you want to experience in the cup.
Is the Comandante Lab Series Nitro Blade suitable for espresso?
Yes, the grind range goes from fine for espresso to coarse for French press. For espresso, it's best to work by weight: 1:2 as a starting point, so from 18 g of coffee around 36 g in the cup. Time is a guide, not a law – no espresso police, what matters is that it tastes good to you. With the Red Clix axle, the step size becomes finer, which makes dialling in easier.
What does the delivery include?
The grinder with Nitro Blade® burr set, the crank with black lacquered oak knob, a transparent polymer bean jar, a dark glass bean jar with lid, a small Comandante wristband and a merino wool felt mat.
Can I see the grinder before buying?
Gladly, as long as it's currently on display. In our showrooms at the Bern store at Gerberngasse 44 and the Zurich store at Hagenholzstrasse 50b, we show a wide selection, but not our entire range, and the display changes. Drop us a quick line before your visit at [email protected] or give us a call during business hours, and we'll check whether the Lab Series Nitro Blade is on site.
How fast is delivery?
We deliver throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2 to 4 working days. Click and Collect is available in Bern and Zurich. You'll find more about us at coffeecoachingclub.ch.
From the roastery
From the perspective of our coffee roastery, the Lab Series Nitro Blade pairs especially well with Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight – full-bodied, dense, with chocolate and nut, whether as filter or espresso. If you're looking for maximum body without any acidity, you'll land on Very Nutty. And if you're curious about fruitiness, you'll discover a lively side with Wild Peach. Any other bean works just as well, including those from the supermarket. That's our recommendation, one of many.
