You place the cup on the scale, press the shot button and watch the espresso run from the bottomless portafilter. On your smartphone the shot curve grows along with it, gram by gram. At the weight you have set, the machine stops by itself – not because a timer has run out, but because exactly as much is in the cup as you wanted. And while the last drop falls, the steam wand is already hissing, because the second boiler was ready the whole time.

The MOVE 2.0 is the second generation of Profitec's compact dual boiler. It keeps what made the MOVE what it is – two separate boilers, a short heat-up time, timed shots – and adds what happens in the background: Bluetooth, the Make Coffee Yours app, connectivity with compatible scales and Brew-by-Weight. At 26.5 centimetres wide and 35.5 centimetres high, it is lower than its predecessor and finds its place in smaller kitchens too. It is developed by Profitec in Bammental near Heidelberg.

Brew-by-Weight with scale and smartphone app

The MOVE works on a timer: you set a shot time, and the machine starts and stops the shot by itself. That stays. What's new is that you connect the MOVE 2.0 to a compatible scale via Bluetooth and let it stop the shot by weight. The difference shows as soon as something changes: grind a touch finer or dose half a gram more, and the shot time shifts – a purely timed shot then puts a different amount in the cup. Brew-by-Weight goes by the result itself.

According to Profitec, compatible scales include Acaia (all models), Decent Scale, DiFluid Microbalance, Eureka Precisa, Felicita, Goat Story Gina, Hiroia Jimmy, Skale II, Varia AKU (all Bluetooth-enabled models with updated firmware), Solo Barista, Ikape and Brewista X. In the Make Coffee Yours app you adjust every setting that is also available on the display, and you see the complete shot curve in real time. Alternatively, the MOVE 2.0 can be controlled via Beanconqueror. If you work by brew ratio – 1:2 as a starting point, not as a law – you see in black and white what a change in grind size does.

Dual boiler with ring brew group and Fast Heat-Up

Inside, two boilers are at work: the optimised ring brew group with a 0.27 litre boiler volume for the coffee, and a stainless steel boiler with 0.7 litres for steam and hot water. You program both temperatures separately, and espresso and milk foam work at the same time. The optimised boiler volume is also the reason why the MOVE 2.0, with Fast Heat-Up Mode, is ready for the first espresso in about seven minutes. On days without milk, you use it as a single boiler.

Separate control is the real point of a dual boiler. The brew temperature helps decide which compounds dissolve from the puck – warmer brings more body and sweetness, cooler more definition and aroma. When steam power is decoupled from that decision, you choose the brew temperature by taste. The low-noise vibration pump is designed for quiet operation.

OLED display and programmable shot buttons

The discreet OLED display shows you temperature and menu, and during the shot the Shot Counter counts the extraction time to the second. You program the shot buttons to your recipe, pre-infusion is adjustable, and there is also a timer function and a programmable ECO mode. The dual pressure gauge keeps an eye on boiler and pump pressure, and the Barista Light shines onto the cup during the shot.

Portafilter, care and water filter

The bottomless portafilter is modular: with the silicone spouts it becomes a spouted portafilter, and without them you see the extraction directly from below – helpful for spotting channeling. Included are baskets for 7, 14 and 21 grams, a blind basket, a tamper and a cleaning brush.

The MOVE 2.0 helps with care: it cleans the brew group automatically with a program and reminds you about cleaning, descaling and changing the filter. A Make Coffee Yours water filter cartridge and a test strip for carbonate hardness are included – depending on your water hardness, you choose the matching filter setting. If you want to know total and carbonate hardness more precisely, measure with the BRITA test kit. The water tank holds 2.8 litres and has an adapter for the filter, and if water runs out, a sensor switches the machine off. MOVE 2.0 or MOVE – what's new?

The MOVE 2.0 doesn't change everything; it builds on the MOVE. New are Bluetooth, the app connection, scale integration and Brew-by-Weight, plus a lower build and an optimised boiler volume. For everyone who has little space and still wants espresso and milk foam at the same time. For everyone who already works by weight or wants to start – with a compatible scale, weighing turns into an automatic stop. And for everyone who wants to understand why today's shot tastes different from yesterday's: in the app's shot curve you see what has changed. No shot is exactly repeatable; the bean, the humidity and you yourself change every day. The MOVE 2.0 doesn't take the experimenting off your hands, but it makes the variables visible.

Nobody needs a scale to make good espresso. But once you have experienced how calm a morning becomes when the machine stops by itself at the right moment, you are reluctant to give it up. That is our experience, one among many. Espresso is complex, but it isn't rocket science.

What goes with it

The grinder decides at least as much about the taste as the machine.
