Timemore Sculptor – Electric Single-Dose Grinder in five variants: 064, 064S, 078, 078S, 078 SSP

You load 18 grams into the hopper, the magnetic lid holds without a click. Press the button. The sensor-controlled brushless motor starts smoothly, the flat burrs rotate at your chosen speed, the grounds fall into the magnetically centered dosing cup under the spout. At the end, a quick turn of the patented Rotary Knocker – the statically adhering fines are shaken out of the spout, land in the cup, and the grinder is ready for the next dose. No sticking, no scraping.

Since its introduction, the Timemore Sculptor series has earned a firm place in discussions about single-dose grinders with good value for money. The reason: a combination of thoughtful design, the sensor-controlled brushless motor with PID control and Hall components, the Rotary Knocker, and a CNC aluminum housing that doesn't feel like a budget segment. We stock the complete Sculptor family in five variants: 064, 064S, 078, 078S, and 078 SSP. Coffee Coaching Club is the Swiss importer for Timemore.

Which variant suits whom – the short answer

The five variants differ in three dimensions: Burr size (64mm or 78mm), burr type (Turbo, Flat, or SSP Multipurpose), and grind adjustment (stepped or stepless). This results in a simple decision-making logic:

If you only make filter, pour-over, French press, or siphon and never espresso, the 064 or 078 (Turbo Burrs) will give you the purest filter profile. If you prepare espresso and filter equally and want a single grinder for both, choose the 064S or 078S (Flat Burrs, stepless). If you value clarity for modern light roasts and are looking for a particularly durable burr option, the 078 SSP with SSP Multipurpose Burrs and Red Speed Coating is the choice.

The differences in detail

Sculptor 064 – Filter specialist, compact

64mm Turbo Burrs with two-layer tooth geometry, developed in collaboration with Grindinglabs. Stepped grind adjustment, meaning clear clicks between positions – good for reproducible filter recipes, too coarse for espresso. RPM 800–1200. The grinder specializes in pour-over and alternative brewing methods, delivering an even grind with a low fines content. The 150W brushless motor is deliberately dimensioned for home use – quiet, efficient, more than sufficient for filter grind settings. For home filter coffee enthusiasts who have no espresso ambitions, this is the compact solution.

Sculptor 064S – All-rounder with espresso capability

Same basic construction as the 064, but with 64mm Flat Burrs (also developed with Grindinglabs) and stepless grind adjustment. This transforms the pure filter grinder into a versatile all-rounder: fine espresso, medium filter, coarse French press – all with the same grinder. RPM 800–1200, 150W brushless motor. The flat burrs deliver a clean, sweet character with slightly higher complexity for espresso, but remain balanced for filter. For home baristas who want espresso density and filter clarity in one device, this is the most common choice.

Sculptor 078 – Filter specialist with larger burrs

The larger sister of the 064. 78mm Turbo Burrs with a three-layer pyramidal tooth geometry (arc, vortex, burr teeth) – a Timemore-patented geometry developed in collaboration with Grindinglabs that cuts beans instead of crushing them and reduces fines. Stepped adjustment, not suitable for espresso. 400W brushless motor with PID control, RPM 800–1400 – making it noticeably faster and more powerful than the 064 series. The 078 is the tool for those seeking maximum clarity in the filter range and more motor reserve for dense, light roasted beans. The larger grinding surface (48.5% more than 64mm) reduces friction heat and allows for faster, thermally gentle grinding.

Sculptor 078S – All-rounder with flagship performance

Same platform as the 078, but with 78mm Flat Burrs and stepless adjustment. This is the sweet spot of the series for many: enough grinding surface for clarity and reserve, stepless adjustment for precise espresso dial-in, finer thread pitch than the 064S for even more precise micro-adjustments. 400W brushless motor, RPM 800–1400. The flat burrs deliver full body with clear acidity in espresso, and a sweet-velvety cup with noticeable depth in filter. This is the grinder for home baristas who are serious about espresso and don't want to give up on filter.

Sculptor 078 SSP – with Multipurpose SSP Burrs and Red Speed Coating

The 078 platform with a 78mm SSP Multipurpose Burr set (SSP = Sharp, Stable, Pure – a burr manufacturer from Korea). The MP burrs are designed for versatility: suitable for both espresso and filter with a sharper, more unimodal particle distribution and controlled fines content. In the cup, this means: more clarity, more aroma separation, more noticeable acidity in espresso – with slightly less body and a shorter finish than with standard flat burrs. For pour-over: clean, clear flavors and fast drawdowns.

Additionally, the SSP burrs have a Red Speed Coating (titanium-based), which extends their lifespan up to 6,000 kg – a significant difference compared to typical standard burrs. The 078 SSP is the choice for those who want to experience the character of modern light roasts to the maximum and value particularly durable burrs. For classic dark espressos with a lot of body, the standard flat burrs (078S) are the rounder choice.

The Rotary Knocker and the single-dose issue

A central problem of electric grinders in single-dose workflows: static charge causes fines to cling to the grinding channel. The next dose then brings not only fresh particles, but also the old ones. Timemore solves this with the patented Rotary Knocker – a rotatable ring on the lower housing that briefly mechanically shakes the grinding channel from the outside. A quick turn after each dose, and the fines fall into the dosing cup. Retention remains low, without the need for bellows.

The magnetic dosing cup holds securely under the spout, the magnetic lid of the hopper snaps into place without screws or twist locks. This is not show – this is simply cleaner everyday life.

Common to all variants: sensor-controlled brushless motor with PID control and Hall components, patented Rotary Knocker, magnetic dosing cup, magnetic hopper lid, CNC aluminum housing, approx. 30g hopper capacity. Operating noise approx. 82–87 dB with beans, approx. 65–70 dB empty (depending on RPM).

Who is the Sculptor series for?

The Sculptor is suitable for home baristas looking for a well-made single-dose grinder with honest value for money. Timemore deliberately positions the series below classic flagships like the Weber EG-1 or Option-O Lagom P80 – but with the sensor-controlled motor, stepless adjustment (S-variants), and SSP burr option, it offers features that are rare in this price range.

The Sculptor is not for everyone. If you prefer a more compact grinder or conical burrs: Varia VS3 Gen 2 or VS6 (exclusive Swiss importer). If you want 80mm flat burrs with a pre-crushing system at flagship level: Option-O Lagom P80. If you want the icon with the largest burr upgrade community: Weber Workshops EG-1. The Sculptor is a serious intermediate step, not a makeshift solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Sculptor variant should I choose?

Only filter, pour-over, French press, or siphon: 064 (compact) or 078 (larger burrs, more clarity). Filter and espresso equally: 064S (compact) or 078S (larger burrs, stronger motor, more precise dial-in). More clarity for modern light roasts with particularly durable burrs: 078 SSP. For most home baristas, the 064S or 078S is the most sensible choice.

What is the difference between Turbo Burrs and Flat Burrs?

The patented Timemore Turbo Burrs have multiple tooth levels (three layers in the 078: arc, vortex, burr teeth) that cut beans in multiple stages instead of crushing them. This reduces fines and delivers a particularly even filter grind. However, they are too coarse for espresso. Flat Burrs (S-variants) are more conventional and can grind down to the fine espresso range, but with a slightly higher fines content at coarse settings.

What makes the SSP Burrs of the 078 SSP special?

The 78mm SSP Multipurpose Burrs are a collaboration with SSP – a Korean burr manufacturer that produces specialized grinding discs for high-end grinders. MP stands for "Multipurpose" – meaning equally suitable for espresso and filter. In the cup: sharper, more unimodal particle distribution with more clarity and aroma separation, slightly less body and a shorter finish than with standard flat burrs. Additionally, they have a Red Speed Coating (titanium-based), which extends their lifespan up to 6,000 kg. For classic dark espressos with a lot of body, the standard flat burrs of the 078S are the rounder choice.

What are the differences between 064 and 078 regarding motor power?

The 064 series (064 and 064S) has a 150W brushless motor with RPM 800–1200. The 078 series (078, 078S, 078 SSP) has a 400W brushless motor with RPM 800–1400. The 078 series is significantly more powerful and better suited for dense, light roasted beans at a fine espresso grind setting. The 078 also has 48.5% more grinding surface than the 064 – faster, thermally gentle grinding. The 064 series is more compact and quieter, more than adequately sized for typical home applications.

Can I change the burrs afterwards?

Yes, but with limitations. If you have a 064, you can switch to flat burrs – but the stepped adjustment remains. If you have a 064S, the stepless adjustment also remains after a burr change. The same applies analogously to 078 and 078S. Converting a standard 078S to SSP burrs is possible – the SSP burrs are made to fit. If you buy a Sculptor 078 SSP directly, you save yourself the conversion.

How does the Rotary Knocker work?

There is a rotatable ring on the lower part of the housing. A short turn after grinding mechanically shakes the grinding channel from the outside, and the statically adhering fines fall into the dosing cup. For most beans, this replaces the need for RDT (spraying water droplets on the beans) or bellows. In very dry environments with strong static, a slight RDT can additionally help.

How loud is the Sculptor?

With beans, the volume is approximately 82–87 dB, empty at 65–70 dB (depending on the set RPM). The sensor-controlled brushless motor with PID control runs very smoothly – no sharp frequencies, no vibration. The heavy aluminum housing also dampens sound. In practice, it is significantly more pleasant than many comparable grinders in the same price range.

How low is the retention of the Sculptor?

With the Rotary Knocker and correct workflow, dynamic retention remains low – it works cleanly for single-dose changes between beans. In very dry indoor air with strong static, a slight RDT (one to two drops of water on the beans before grinding) can also help.

Can I see the Timemore Sculptor before buying?

Yes. The Sculptor 064S and 078S are in daily use in the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). We can make the 078 SSP available by appointment upon request. Bringing your own beans is welcome.

How long does delivery take in Switzerland?

2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zurich is possible at any time. Free shipping for orders over CHF 60.

Where can I buy the Timemore Sculptor in Switzerland?

At Coffee Coaching Club, Swiss importer for Timemore. All five variants (064, 064S, 078, 078S, 078 SSP) via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours, or in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich.

Roastery Tip

The Sculptor series is in use in our showroom in several variants. For typical home use with espresso and cappuccino, we recommend the 064S or 078S for beans like our Cozy Chocolate – both flat-burr variants deliver the dense chocolate character with stable sweetness. Nutty Delight comes out particularly velvety on the 078S – the larger burrs bring additional clarity to the nutty notes. Very Nutty for those seeking maximum body without acidity works excellently on any variant. If you experiment with light roasts and single origins: Wild Peach shows additional clarity and aroma separation in the fruity notes on the 078 SSP, which remains more subtle with standard burrs – here, the SSP variant is truly worthwhile. This is our recommendation, one of many.
