Normcore Pressure-Adjustable Tamper

The moment the spring gives way. Gentle, precise, always the same — press down, feel the defined resistance, reach the end, and know: this tamp will be like the last one. And like the next.

Pressure-adjustable, because consistency is something you can taste

Tamping is the least visible variable in espresso preparation. Too little pressure, and the puck cracks. Too much, and the water channels. The hand of the day is never quite the same — sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker, sometimes more playful, sometimes more tired. This is exactly where the spring-loaded mechanism comes in: it takes the human variable out of the equation and hands it over to a calibrated spring.

Three interchangeable springs are included — 15 lb, 25 lb and 30 lb. This way, find the pressure that suits your setup, and stay true to it. The central shaft guides the tamper exactly into the centre of the basket, and the self-levelling plate rests on the rim of the basket. Tamping at an angle becomes mechanically impossible. What remains: an espresso that's comparable from shot to shot — and that's the one thing that truly helps with dialling in.

Our observation: once you've worked with a pressure-adjustable tamper, there's no going back. Not because it necessarily tamps better, but because it's one less variable to think about. Enjoyment before perfection — but consistency doesn't hurt either. Our opinion, one of many.

Which Size for Which Machine

The tamper needs to match the basket size, otherwise the pressure ring won't sit cleanly. Seven options cover the common machines.

45.5 mm for Flair Pro and Flair Pro 2 Espresso Maker. Also fits 54-mm-to-45.5-mm step-down baskets.

49 mm for Flair 49 and Flair 49 Pro. Also fits Normcore's 58-to-49-mm and 57.5-to-49-mm step-down baskets.

51 mm for La Pavoni Europiccola and Professional Millenium (machines from model year 2000 onward, 60-mm brew group).

51.5 mm for machines with slightly larger 51-mm baskets.

53.3 mm for Breville/Sage machines with 54-mm portafilters: Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser, Duo-Temp Pro.

57.5 mm for Ascaso machines as well as Lelit Anita, Diana and Anna with 57-mm portafilters.

58.5 mm for the large majority. Fits standard 58-mm portafilters – La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Bezzera (newer models), Lelit, commercial setups. Compatible with VST and IMS precision baskets.

Who Is This Tamper For

For everyone who wants consistency without having to reinvent their tamping technique every morning. For home setups where several people tamp on the same machine – it then tastes the same for both. For cafés with rotating shifts.

If you prefer it classic and like to feel the pressure by hand, a classic tamper serves you better. Both are legitimate. No espresso police – just a tool that either suits you or doesn't.

Goes Well With

A cleanly tampable surface needs a good setup. A Tamping Station holds the portafilter in position. If you like it simple and precise, you'll find it all in our Normcore range and more, from the Puck Screen to the WDT-Tool – we're the exclusive Swiss importer. Premium lovers go for Weber Workshops.

Grinder and machine complete the trio: Varia coffee grinders for affordable precision, Weber EG-1 or Option-O Lagom for maximum clarity. Espresso machines are covered in our advisory tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tamper size fits my machine?

Standard machines like La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit (58 mm) and most commercial machines need 58.5 mm. Breville/Sage machines with a 54-mm portafilter need 53.3 mm. Ascaso and Lelit Anita/Diana/Anna with a 57-mm portafilter need 57.5 mm. La Pavoni Europiccola/Professional Millenium need 51 mm. Flair 49 and Flair 49 Pro need 49 mm. Flair Pro and Flair Pro 2 need 45.5 mm. If unsure, write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch with your machine model, and we'll get back to you during business hours.

Which spring should I use?

The medium 25-lb spring comes pre-installed, which suits most people. 15 lb for a very fine grind size and lighter roasts, 30 lb for stronger pressure and denser pucks. All three springs are included and can be tried out – that's part of the tool.

How does pressure-adjustable tamping technically improve things?

It removes the day's form from the pressure. The spring always releases the same force once it triggers. The self-levelling plate additionally ensures an even surface. The result isn't necessarily a better espresso – but a comparable one. That's exactly what helps with dialling in.

Can I see the tamper before buying?

Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Ordering online is the primary way, with delivery across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2–4 working days. If a showroom visit sounds appealing, the door is open.

Do I need to maintain the tamper?

Wiping it down with a damp cloth is enough, often a dry cloth works too – no dishwasher, no harsh cleaners. The spring mechanism doesn't like prolonged moisture. Store it dry, that's it.

Roastery Tip: With a pressure-adjustable tamper, it's especially worth trying our full-bodied beans. Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight need a cleanly pressed puck to fully unfold their chocolate and caramel notes. If maximum body without acidity is the goal, Very Nutty delivers. And for the curious, Wild Peach is a fruity journey of discovery. But that's our recommendation – try what appeals to you.
