A short press, an audible snap, and the tamper springs back, while a level, firm coffee bed rests in the basket.
The Impulse Impact Tamper from the Espresso Series by Timemore combines a spring system for even tamping pressure with a collar that keeps the base straight in the 58 mm basket.
Inside the tamper sits a spring system. As you press, it delivers stable, concentrated tamping pressure onto the coffee bed; afterwards, two springs return the tamper to its starting position with a snap. That way, the pressure depends less on how hard you happen to be pressing on that particular morning.
The collar rests on the rim of the basket with a 69 mm contact surface and keeps the base at a right angle. Between the tamper and the body there is a gap of less than 0.05 mm, so that nothing wobbles even after years; Timemore designs the mechanism for more than 60 000 tamps. A chamfer on the lower edge breaks the vacuum as you lift, so the puck stays exactly as it is.
Timemore had 16 shots pulled with identical parameters – VST basket, 18 g of coffee, 30 g in the glass – prepared by two people with very different amounts of barista experience. According to the manufacturer, the flow rate differed by less than 0.1 g per second. That is a manufacturer's measurement, not an independent one, but it shows what this is all about: consistency.
Particle size and uniformity determine the quality of the extraction, and the tamper holds that uniformity in place. Water always takes the path of least resistance; a puck tamped straight, and in much the same way every time, offers it the same path everywhere. More force doesn't make better espresso; repeatable pressure makes it more predictable.
No espresso laws, no espresso police: the coffee has to taste good, we measure by weight ratio, with 1:2 as a starting point, never by time alone. No shot can be replicated – the bean, the humidity and the person change every day. Our opinion is one of many.
The flat base leaves the coffee bed level, while the ripple base presses concentric grooves into the puck. Each variant comes with one base. Which one appeals to you more is a matter of eye and feel; both work.
The handle is made of anodized aluminum and softly rounded, the base of precision-milled stainless steel. At around 640 g, the tamper sits solidly in the hand. Design and feel influence your enjoyment before the first sip arrives, and black or white is not a technical decision but one for your counter. Nobody needs a spring-loaded tamper – you want one or you don't. Included is a silicone mat for the tamper to stand on; it protects the base and, with its wavy shape, catches fine particles.

For anyone with a 58 mm portafilter who would like their tamping pressure to be more consistent from one day to the next, and for households where several people share the same machine. No particular level of experience is required, and none is too little. As a partner of Timemore, we carry more barista tools from the brand in our Timemore Collection.
A tamper compresses; it doesn't distribute. Clumps in the ground coffee are broken up by a WDT tool: affordable and precise, the Normcore WDT Tool; a more mechanical approach, the Weber Workshops Moonraker – you'll find both among the WDT Tools.
A Puck Screen on top of the tamped coffee helps distribute the water further – affordable and precise from Normcore, a step further from Weber Workshops, among the Puck Screens. And for the weight ratio: Normcore for the compact, precise route, Acaia for the app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth, among the coffee scales. More tampers, from the Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper to the Weber Workshops Tamper, are in the Tamper Collection.
The tamper has a diameter of 58.4 mm and is built for 58 mm baskets. Timemore has announced further diameters; at the moment, it is available in 58.4 mm.
Neither one is better. The flat base leaves the puck level, the ripple base leaves concentric grooves. Both work, both have their fans. Our opinion is one of many.
A spring system inside provides stable, concentrated tamping pressure as you press. Two springs then return the tamper to its starting position with a snap, while the collar keeps it straight in the basket.
The tamper with the base you choose – flat or ripple – and a silicone mat for it to stand on.
Yes, we'd be happy to show you the Impulse in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b); it's best to check shortly beforehand whether it's on site at the moment.
An evenly tamped puck pays off above all with dense roasts, because that's where body and sweetness set the tone. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring rounded chocolate, caramel and nut notes to the cup. Anyone looking for maximum body without any acidity at all will find it in Very Nutty. For a fruity experience on the side, there's Wild Peach. Every bean you enjoy is the right one. That is our recommendation, one of many.
