Flair Flow Control 2 Portafilter

You fill the beans into your grinder, grind, dose into the portafilter. The lever of the Flair NEO goes down. You feel the resistance, the even pressure, then the espresso flows from the spout — dark, syrupy, with a creamy crown. And you didn't have to adjust your grind size to the millimetre for that to happen.

That's the idea behind the Flow Control 2 Portafilter. The restrictive spout regulates the water flow through the puck. This creates the pressure needed for a clean espresso extraction — even if the grind is not finely tuned. Even with pre-ground coffee. Even if your grinder isn't really built for espresso.

What distinguishes Flow Control 2 from its predecessor

The original Flow Control technology was launched in 2020 with the Flair NEO. It worked — but the spout was permanently installed, which made cleaning difficult. With intensive use, the restriction opening could clog over time.

The second generation solves this with a removable spout. You unscrew the spout, clean it separately, and reinsert it. The result: consistent performance over time because nothing clogs. With proper care, the spouts last a long time — and if one gets damaged, there are replacement packs.

How Flow Control changes extraction

Espresso is created by the interplay of pressure, temperature, time, and grind size. With classic bottomless portafilters, the grind size must be fine enough for the coffee itself to create enough resistance. A grinder that doesn't grind fine enough for espresso — or pre-ground coffee — would otherwise produce a much too fast, thin shot.

The Flow Control 2 takes over part of this resistance through mechanical restriction. The water takes longer to flow through the puck. The contact time increases. Pressure builds up. Aromatic compounds dissolve, crema forms, the shot becomes rich.

Our opinion is one of many: For most people who use a Flair NEO or Classic at home or on the go, the Flow Control 2 is the simpler setup. With a good hand grinder like the Comandante, you can eventually switch to a bottomless portafilter and make the grind suitable for extraction yourself. Until then, and also for mobile use with pre-ground coffee, Flow Control is the easier solution.

All features at a glance

Removable Spout. The central upgrade over its predecessor. You can remove the spout for thorough cleaning, treat it with detergent, or replace it with a spare if needed.

Pressure build-up without finely tuned grinding. The restriction creates the back pressure that the coffee puck would otherwise have to build up itself. This allows the portafilter to work even with grinders that don't reach the fine espresso range.

Pre-ground coffee possible. For on the go, in a hotel, when travelling — if you don't have a grinder with you, you can also pull a drinkable espresso with good pre-ground coffee using the Flow Control 2.

Optional stainless steel dispersion screen. Distributes the water more evenly over the puck. One version comes with the screen, one without — if you already have one, you save money.

Compact for travel. Like the entire Flair NEO, the Flow Control 2 is also mobile. It fits into the existing setup without additional weight.

Who is the Flow Control 2 for?

For everyone who uses a Flair NEO, NEO Flex, Classic or Signature and wants an uncomplicated entry into espresso without a finely tuned grinder. For everyone who is mobile and works with different grind sizes – when traveling, in the office, in a camper. For everyone who wants a second brew head in parallel to the bottomless portafilter to pull several shots in a row faster.

If you own a Flair 58, 58+ or 58+2: The Flow Control 2 is not compatible. These models have 58 mm industry standard portafilters. Instead, check out the matching accessories in our Flair Espresso Collection.

What else you need

A grinder makes the biggest difference — even with Flow Control. For those looking for an affordable and precise hand grinder for on the go: the Comandante hand grinders. If you're looking for an electric grinder for home: the Varia coffee grinders are affordable, the Weber Workshops EG-1 is in the higher segment.

For caring for your Flair setup: cleaning products and tools can be found in the Cleaning Collection. For those looking for tampers, WDT tools and puck preparation: affordable from the Normcore Collection, in the higher segment from Weber Workshops.

And the coffee itself — our coffee beans from our own roastery in Bern, delivered within 2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Flow Control 2 fit my Flair?

The Flow Control 2 is compatible with Flair NEO, NEO Flex, Classic and Signature, provided they were produced after November 2017. It does NOT fit Flair 58, 58+ and 58+2 — these have 58 mm industry standard portafilters. If you are unsure, write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch, and we will check compatibility.

What is the difference to the bottomless portafilter?

The bottomless portafilter has no restriction at the spout. You see the espresso flow directly from the puck and need a grinder that grinds finely enough for the pressure to build up in the puck itself. The Flow Control 2 mechanically takes over this resistance — but you don't see the shot directly. Both have their justification. Many Flair users have both portafilters.

Does this also work with pre-ground coffee?

Yes. That's one of the main reasons for Flow Control. Pre-ground coffee is usually not fine enough for a classic espresso. The Flow Control 2's restriction mechanically builds up the missing pressure. Of course: freshly ground coffee tastes better. But on the go, Flow Control plus pre-ground is a viable solution.

Do I need the dispersion screen?

The stainless steel dispersion screen distributes hot water more evenly over the puck and reduces channelling. It comes standard with most Flair models. If you already have one, the version without a screen is sufficient. If you are buying the portafilter as a second brew head or as a replacement, the version with a screen is worthwhile.

How do I clean the Flow Control 2?

After each shot, knock out the puck, rinse the portafilter under hot water, and dry it with a cloth. Approximately every one to two weeks—depending on frequency of use—unscrew the spout and clean it thoroughly. This keeps the restriction consistent over time.

Can I see the Flow Control 2 live before buying?

Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich-Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) we display the Flair range including accessories. As the exclusive Swiss importer of Flair Espresso, we carry the complete range.

Roastery Tip

From the coffee roastery: For the Flair with Flow Control 2, we like dense, full-bodied profiles. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight deliver the chocolatey, nutty notes that harmonise particularly well with the Flair pressure profile. For maximum body: Very Nutty. For a fruity profile: Wild Peach, lively and a discovery for the curious. This is our recommendation, one of many.
