Features of the Technika VI

Dual boiler system with rotary pump

A coffee boiler of around 0.5 litres and a steam and hot water boiler of around 1 litre work separately. You can pull espresso and froth milk at the same time. The rotary pump is built in.

Simultaneous heating and Fast Heat-Up

Both boilers heat up at the same time. With the Fast Heat-Up mode, the machine is ready after around 11 minutes according to ECM; the user manual states around 12 to 13 minutes with Fast Heating activated.

PID control for both boilers

You set the temperature of both boilers via the PID control. Ex works, the brew temperature is set to 92 °C and the steam temperature to 128 °C, adjustable between 115 and 134 °C. The display switches between °C and °F if you wish.

Subtle display and programmable times

You set everything via the display and two navigation buttons. Two automatic on and off times can be programmed per day.

Active and passive pre-infusion

The pump first builds pressure for an adjustable time (active), then pauses for a second adjustable time (passive) and then starts the extraction at 9 bar. ECM recommends active pre-infusion in tank mode and purely passive pre-infusion with a fixed water connection.

Manometers in blue

A boiler pressure manometer and a pump pressure manometer with blue dials sit at the top left and right of the front.

The details in everyday use

ECM brew group

ECM describes the patented ECM brew group as a further development of the E61 by Faema. Included are one portafilter with a single spout and one with a double spout.

Water tank or fixed water connection

Via a rotary valve you switch from the water tank to the fixed water connection and activate the mode in the menu. The metal hose is included. According to the user manual, the line needs at least 1 and at most 2 bar; a pressure reducer and shut-off valve are not included.

Steam boiler can be switched off

If you only pull espresso, you switch off the steam boiler via the menu or a button combination and save energy.

ECO mode

Ex works, the machine switches to ECO mode after 90 minutes without a shot. You set the countdown in 30-minute steps up to 600 minutes or switch the function off.

Cleaning and filter reminders

Clean mode reminds you to clean the brew group after an adjustable number of 10 to 200 shots, and the Filter Reminder reminds you to change the water filter after up to 200 litres.

Pump pressure and offset

The brew pressure can be adjusted via an adjusting screw, according to ECM only by qualified technicians. In the menu you adjust the temperature offset.

Who the Technika VI is made for

For everyone who often prepares espresso and milk drinks one right after the other and wants to set brew temperature and steam separately. The fixed water connection saves refilling, while the water tank makes the machine independent of a water line. If you mainly drink espresso, you switch off the steam boiler.

If you are deciding between a single boiler, a heat exchanger and a dual boiler, our coffee machine advisor tool helps you narrow it down. We explain the difference between the heating systems in the deep dive on single boiler, heat exchanger and dual boiler, and the brew groups in the tech check on E61, saturated groups and hybrids. Our opinion is one of many.

In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can see machines live. In the espresso machine and grinder comparison in the showroom you test several machines directly side by side, an option, not a requirement. A free consultation appointment is also possible. Not every model is set up at all times, so write to us with the model you are interested in beforehand at [email protected]. You will find more models in the ECM collection and among all espresso machines.

You will find the conditions for the introductory course when buying a machine further down this page. Financing available. Delivery in 2–4 working days, throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein, or Click & Collect in Bern and Zurich.

What goes with it

For everyone who wants grinders that are affordable and precise: the VS3 from our Varia collection or hand grinders from Comandante and Timemore. If you want more: the VS6 by Varia, the EG-1 by Weber Workshops or the Lagom by Option-O. Grinders with a bean hopper can be found at Eureka and Mahlkönig.

For everyone who wants scales that are affordable and precise: the Normcore collection. If you want an app and flow rate display: Acaia. The same applies to tampers and puck screens: Normcore or Weber Workshops, both in our barista accessories. For backflushing and group cleaning you will find everything under machine and grinder cleaning, and water filters at Brita.

Frequently asked questions

What does dual boiler mean for the ECM Technika VI?

Two separate stainless steel boilers: around 0.5 litres for the coffee, around 1 litre for steam and hot water. Both are regulated via the PID control and heated simultaneously, so you pull espresso and froth milk in parallel.

Can I connect the Technika VI to the water mains?

Yes. Via a rotary valve and the menu you switch from the water tank to the fixed water connection; the metal hose is included. According to the user manual, the line needs 1 to 2 bar; a pressure reducer and shut-off valve are not included.

How long does it take to heat up?

ECM states around 11 minutes with Fast Heat-Up mode, the user manual around 12 to 13 minutes with Fast Heating activated. The machine is ready when the display shows the set brew temperature.

Can I switch off the steam boiler?

Yes. Via the menu or a button combination you switch off the steam boiler when you only pull espresso. For steam and hot water it needs to be switched on.

How do I clean the brew group?

A daily backflush without detergent, and with detergent about every 50 shots. The blind basket is included, and Clean mode reminds you after an adjustable number of shots.

Can I see the product before buying?

Yes, by arrangement in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) or Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Not every model is set up at all times, so write to us beforehand at [email protected]. For a direct comparison of several machines, there is the comparison workshop in the showroom.

Tip from the roastery: With a dual boiler, you set the brew temperature independently of the steam. Slightly hotter brings more body, slightly cooler more aroma. As a starting point we use a ratio of 1:2 by weight. For espresso and milk drinks we recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight, both full-bodied with notes of chocolate and nuts. If you are looking for maximum body without acidity, reach for Very Nutty. For the curious: Wild Peach shows the fruity side. This is our recommendation, one of many.
