Lelit Mara X3 – Espresso Machine with Pagaia Flow Control
Six in the morning. The kitchen is still quiet, the sun is just climbing over the rooftops. You lay your hand on the wooden lever, feel the grain under your fingers, and begin to pull. The water flow follows your movement – slowly, then opening, then held again. This lever is called Pagaia, and it's what sets the Mara X3 apart from everything Lelit has built before.
At Coffee Coaching Club, you're part of our community – not because you buy a machine, but because you're interested in coffee. The Mara X3 is one of many ways to craft your espresso. Our opinion is one of many; your taste matters.
Pagaia – Flow Control becomes tangible
Pagaia is Lelit's new patented electronic flow control system. Via an ergonomic wooden lever, you directly control the electronic pump – pre-infusion, main extraction, pouring, all in your hand. Different compounds in the coffee dissolve at different pressure points: acidity early, sweetness in the middle, bitterness late. Those who shape the flow, shape the aromatic time window. This is not a promise of the perfect shot – it's an invitation to explore. Flow profiling remains a learning process, not a guarantee.
L58E Brew Group with Dual Probe PID
The L58E is Lelit's evolution of the classic E61 brew group. Mechanical pre-infusion via lever position, compatible with the LELIT58 Barista Tool ecosystem. The patented Dual-Probe PID system measures twice per second at the boiler and brew group. This keeps the brewing temperature closer to the target value than with classic heat exchangers. Three presets via the mode switch – Warm, Hot, Extra Hot – cover light, medium, and dark roasts.
Xmode Coffee and Xmode Steam
Two modes, two logics. In Xmode Coffee, the machine prioritizes espresso temperature – more stable shots, fewer flushing cycles. In Xmode Steam, steam pressure increases for quick frothing with powerful milk texture. You switch with the push of a button. The new 3-hole steam wand makes milk texturing more precise than with previous models.

All Features at a Glance
Pagaia – electronic Flow Control
Patented flow profiling via a wooden lever. You determine the water speed in real-time, from pre-infusion to extraction. The aromatic phase of the shot can be specifically extended or shortened.
Dual Probe PID
Two sensors – one on the boiler, one on the brew group – measure twice per second. This significantly reduces temperature fluctuations of a classic HX machine.
Xmode Coffee / Xmode Steam with Steam Boost
Switch between brewing and steam priority at the touch of a button. In Steam mode, Steam Boost provides additional steam reserve for milk frothing.
Wood Details – Smoked Oak or Zebrano
Knobs, levers, portafilter handle, and tamper made of smoked oak for the stainless steel version, Zebrano wood for black and white. The feet are also made of wood – this makes moving it on the counter quieter and protects the worktop.
Double Manometer
One manometer for boiler pressure (steam), one for pump pressure (brewing). You see both worlds simultaneously.
Reserve Mode and Standby
After inactivity, the Mara X3 enters an energy-saving mode. Reactivation via the brew lever.
Scope of Delivery
LELIT58 2-way portafilter with wooden handle and Coffee Slide, LELIT58 IMS baskets (9–11g, 14–18g, 18–21g, blind basket), LELIT58 wooden tamper, cup warmer, 70 L water softener filter, initial cleaning kit, brew group brush, L58E gasket.
Who the Mara X3 is for
For everyone who wants a heat exchanger that feels like a dual boiler – without dual boiler complexity. For everyone who wants to explore flow profiling without making the jump to a flagship machine. For everyone who combines espresso and milk in one session without long changeover times. Nobody needs a Mara X3. You want it – or you don't. Both answers are valid.
Those who exclusively drink espresso and don't need steam will be happier with a single-boiler machine. Those looking for maximum separation of brewing and steaming should look towards dual boilers – Lelit itself offers its dual-boiler flagship, the Bianca V3, from the Lelit range. The choice depends on what is more important to you.
What else you need
An espresso machine is only as good as the grinder that feeds it. From our experience: those looking for an affordable and precise grinder are well served with the Varia VS3 – electric, compact, single dose. Those who want more depth and maximum consistency should look at the Weber Workshops EG-1 or the Option-O Lagom series.
For preparation, we recommend a scale – Normcore is affordable and precise, the Acaia Lunar offers app integration and flow rate display for those who want to go deeper. Additionally, a tamper, a tamping station, and a milk pitcher. And of course: freshly roasted coffee beans from our own coffee roastery.
Water makes up the majority of your espresso. If you want to work precisely here too, mineralize your water yourself – the Apax Labs drops from the CCC selection make this easy and reproducible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy the Lelit Mara X3 in Switzerland?
Directly online from us, delivery throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein in 2–4 working days. You can see it live in our showrooms in Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b, 8050 Zurich) and Bern (Gerberngasse 44, 3011 Bern). Click & Collect at both locations. Financing possible.
What's new in the Mara X3 compared to its predecessor?
The most striking new feature is Pagaia – the patented electronic flow control system with a wooden lever. Additionally, there's the revised design with Side Ribbon, the 3-hole steam wand for finer milk texture, the new Silent Pump, the new Gem-Shape knob design, the wooden feet, and the smoked oak or Zebrano wood details. The Dual-Probe PID technology has been adopted and further developed.
How does Pagaia differ from classic flow profiling?
Classic flow profiling with a paddle on E61 machines mechanically controls a needle valve. Pagaia electronically controls pump performance. Both paths lead to the same goal: adjusting water flow. Pagaia has the advantage that the movement is precisely translated into pump performance – and the wooden lever feels pleasant.
Is the Mara X3 suitable for milk drinks?
Yes. The heat exchanger design provides enough steam reserve for several cappuccinos in a row. In Xmode Steam with Steam Boost, milk frothing is faster. The 3-hole nozzle results in a finer microfoam structure than the earlier 2-hole nozzles.
Which grinder suits the Mara X3?
From our experience: a grinder in a similar class with good grind quality, precise adjustability, and low retention. The Varia VS3 is the affordable recommendation. Those investing in this machine class often look towards Option-O Lagom or Weber EG-1 – both bring the grind consistency to a level that fully exploits the Mara X3.
Where is the Mara X3 built?
In Castegnato near Brescia, Northern Italy – handcrafted in the Lelit factory. Lelit has been building espresso machines since 2002.
Roastery Tip
If you want to get the most out of the Mara X3 with Pagaia, start with a bean that offers room for extraction. We recommend Cozy Chocolate for dense, chocolatey cups and Nutty Delight for nutty sweetness – both full-bodied, both aromatic. If you're looking for maximum body without any acidity, Very Nutty is a good choice. If you want to discover a fruity profile: Wild Peach – lively and uncomplicated. In the introductory course at our coffee roastery (approx. 60 minutes, included with machine purchase), we show you how to shift the aromatic time window with Pagaia.
