Normcore Pressure Regulating Tamper Titanium PVD
The rich anthracite of the PVD coating. You guide the tamper into the basket, the powder recedes – and doesn't stick. A tool that no longer looks like a tool, but an instrument.
Pressure Regulating with Titanium PVD Coating
The mechanics are identical to the classic pressure-regulating tamper: central shaft, self-leveling plate, three interchangeable springs (15 lb, 25 lb, 30 lb) for the calibrated force you choose. What's different is on the surface.
The titanium PVD coating is applied to the stainless steel body in a vacuum process. This creates a layer that is harder than the steel underneath – significantly more scratch-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and antistatic. This is not marketing: coffee powder that normally adheres to a flat stainless steel surface detaches almost completely from a PVD surface. Less powder on the tool after tamping, less cleaning, a cleaner workflow.
The rich anthracite is the optical consequence – not a coating in the sense of paint, but an atomically bonded surface. It looks like it doesn't want to leave. And it doesn't.
Our observation: The PVD tamper does not make measurably better espresso than the standard version. But it stays beautiful longer. And it says something different on the counter. Both legitimate. Our opinion, one of many.

Which Size for Which Machine
53.3 mm for Breville/Sage machines with 54-mm portafilters: Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser, Duo-Temp Pro.
58.5 mm for the vast majority – standard 58-mm portafilters from La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Bezzera (newer models), Lelit, commercial setups. Compatible with VST and IMS precision baskets.
For other sizes (45.5 / 49 / 51 / 51.5 / 57.5 mm), we offer the pressure-regulating tamper in the stainless steel version.
Who is this Tamper for
For anyone who wants both the consistency of a spring-loaded tamper and the look and feel of a PVD surface. For cafes where the tool is handled a hundred times a day and should look the part. For home setups where every detail counts – not because it has to, but because it can.
If you want the same mechanism without the surcharge for the coating: the standard tamper does the same thing functionally.

A tamping station keeps the portafilter stable. For all attachments around the puck – puck screen, WDT tool, distributor – you'll find the right piece in the Normcore range. We are the exclusive Swiss importer. Premium enthusiasts will find the hand-milled alternative at Weber Workshops.
Grinder and machine form the trio: Varia coffee grinders for affordable precision, Weber EG-1 or Option-O Lagom for maximum clarity. You can find espresso machines in the consultation tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the titanium PVD coating do?
Three measurable effects: hardness (significantly higher than stainless steel, more scratch-resistant in daily use), antistatic properties (coffee powder adheres less to the surface), and corrosion resistance (even with prolonged water contact). Visually, it provides the rich anthracite that visually distinguishes this variant from the standard stainless steel version.
Does the PVD tamper tamp better than the standard one?
Functionally, the mechanism is identical – same springs, same leveling plate, same consistency. What the coating achieves is seen in the workflow: less adhesion to the base means less wiping. Flavor-wise, the espresso is indistinguishable.
Which tamper size fits my machine?
53.3 mm for Breville/Sage with 54-mm portafilter. 58.5 mm for standard machines with 58-mm portafilter (La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, commercial). Other sizes can be found in the standard pressure-regulating tamper. If unsure: contact us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch with your machine model, we will reply during business hours.
Which spring should I use?
The medium 25 lb spring is pre-installed, which suits most people. 15 lb for fine grind and lighter roasts, 30 lb for stronger pressure and denser pucks. All three springs are included.
Can I see the tamper before buying?
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Online ordering is the primary method, delivery throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2–4 business days.
Roastery Tip: The PVD surface looks best with dense, full-bodied roasts, as the powder adheres less anyway. Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight are our recommendations for those looking for chocolate, nuts, and caramel. Very Nutty for maximum body without acidity. Wild Peach for fruity discoveries. But this is our recommendation – try what appeals to you.
