Weber Workshops EG-1 – 80mm Flat Burr Espresso Grinder
The Blind Shaker slides off the oak plate. Two neodymium magnets snap it precisely into position — no play, no fiddling. The dose goes into the hopper, then a press of the button. The brushless motor engages, quiet, almost casual. Nothing sharp, no whine, just a deep hum. The 80mm CORE Burrs run at the RPM you've set — 900, 1200, 1800, depending on the bean and the roast. The grounds fall into the shaker, a quick shake and the coffee distributes evenly. It goes onto the portafilter, then a flip. Puck. Clean. The same every morning, and mornings become something to look forward to.
The Weber Workshops EG-1 has been the grinder others measure themselves against since 2015. Douglas Weber, who spent over a decade as a product designer at Apple — among other things on the original iPod team — before founding Weber Workshops in 2014, designed it as a single-dose espresso grinder for home and café use, with the explicit ambition that it be used for decades. In the current Mk.3 version with 80mm CORE Burrs (magnetically mounted, tool-free swap), variable speed from 500 to 1800 RPM, PID-controlled motor for constant RPM, and retention under 0.1g. Coffee Coaching Club is the exclusive Swiss importer of Weber Workshops and carries the full range including accessories and spare parts.
What the 80mm flat burrs do in the cup
The EG-1 grinds with 80mm CORE burrs. That's not just a number — size determines the particle distribution. Smaller burrs (48mm, 54mm, 64mm) typically produce a larger share of very fine particles (fines) alongside the main particles. That's a bimodal distribution, which creates body, crema, and a certain sweetness in espresso.
80mm flat burrs work differently. The particle distribution is narrower, the fines share lower. What becomes tastable in the cup: more clarity, more defined aroma separation, cleanly separated acidities. That doesn't mean 80mm is automatically better — it means it produces a different result. The difference shows up especially with lighter roasts and filter-coffee crossovers. Our observation after years of the EG-1 in the showroom: anyone who wants to hear the nuances of their bean finds more of them on the EG-1. That's one view, one of many.
The refinements
The current EG-1 is the third major generation. CORE (DB-1) burrs are the standard burr set of the Mk.3 and replace the earlier BASE (DB-3) burrs — developed by Weber specifically for a balanced character between clarity and body. For anyone wanting even more specific profiles: the ULTRA (DB-2) burrs (available separately, manufactured by SSP for Weber) are optimized for clean, low-fines cups with pour-over and filter.
Variable speed from 500 to 1800 RPM — adjustable in real time while grinding. Lower RPM (around 800) tends to produce fewer fines and more clarity, higher RPM (around 1300) more body and texture. The same coffee can be ground in different ways without ever swapping the grinder. The PID-controlled motor detects the bean's resistance and adjusts torque in real time to keep the set RPM constant even with hard beans. New in the Mk.3: a dedicated purge button at the centre of the RPM dial that briefly reverses the burrs and then runs them at maximum speed — to dislodge foreign objects or jammed beans and flush out the last coffee residue.
Tool-free cleaning, Blind Shaker, oak plate
The lid of the EG-1 is held in place magnetically, lifting off in one motion. The upper burr is also seated magnetically and comes out without tools. Within 20 seconds the grinding chamber is clean, everything back in place. That sounds like a small detail — but anyone who uses a grinder daily knows how much an easy cleaning routine is worth.
The Blind Shaker is a Weber in-house development, now used by barista world champions around the globe. A magnetically mounted collection cup with a special lid that homogenises the grounds with a brief shake. The oak plate under the grinder positions the shaker precisely, so it sits exactly where it should during grinding.

Who the EG-1 is for
The EG-1 suits anyone looking for a grinder for the next ten to twenty years and wanting a tool built for exactly that timespan. Anyone who works deliberately single-dose at home and wants to switch between different beans without rinsing. Cafés and roasteries that want a grinder for competition use or for the bar.
The EG-1 isn't for everyone. Anyone looking for an all-round grinder for different brewing methods finds at Varia (exclusive Swiss importer) a good choice at a significantly lower price. Anyone looking for 80mm precision with more modern features finds in the Option-O Lagom P80 a younger alternative. Anyone wanting to optimise specifically for light roasts should look at the Option-O Lagom 01 . A detailed comparison of the endgame options is on the page EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.
The EG-1 remains the icon. The grinder with which Weber Workshops showed that grinding at home can reach the same quality as at the bar. Anyone who wants the tactile detail, the longevity and the watchmaker-level finish has, with the EG-1, something that still feels good even after years. Whoever wants it knows why.

What goes with it
The EG-1 unfolds its potential with thermally stable espresso machines. The La Marzocco Linea Mini R with a saturated group head is the classic combination — both devices focus on stability and precision. The La Marzocco Linea Micra or the GS3 are strong partners. For manual lever extraction: Flair Espresso 58+2 — the EG-1's precision really shows in manual pressure build-up.
For brew-by-weight on the La Marzocco Mini R, the Acaia Lunar (Swiss importer) is a good fit. For a standalone espresso scale with app and flow-rate display, also the Acaia Lunar. For puck prep: the Weber Workshops Moonraker or, as a more affordable option, the Normcore WDT Tool (exclusive Swiss importer). For airtight bean storage: Airscape. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs mineral concentrates (exclusive Swiss importer).
Frequently asked questions
What makes the EG-1's 80mm burrs special?
Larger burrs produce a narrower particle distribution with fewer fines at the same dose. This tends to lead to more clarity and more defined aroma separation in the cup — especially noticeable with light roasts and filter coffee. 48mm or 64mm burrs, by contrast, produce more fines and therefore more body and crema. Both have their place — the EG-1 specialises in clarity.
Can I swap the burrs?
Yes. The CORE (DB-1) burrs are magnetically mounted and can be swapped in under two minutes without tools. Official Weber alternative: the ULTRA (DB-2), manufactured by SSP, for clean cups with filter. One grinder, several characters.
Is the EG-1 suitable for filter coffee?
Yes. The grind size adjustment covers the whole range from espresso to coarse for French press. With the CORE burrs it works as an all-rounder, with the ULTRA Burrs it's especially interesting for filter coffee and light roasts. Anyone looking for a pure filter-coffee specialist finds in the Timemore Sculptor 078 a focused alternative.
How loud is the EG-1?
Quiet. The brushless motor works without the high-pitched whine of cheaper grinders, the aluminium housing dampens vibrations. In our showroom the EG-1 runs continuously without disturbing conversations.
How long does an EG-1 last?
Weber Workshops builds with the explicit ambition that the EG-1 be used for decades. Wear parts like wiper blades and cleaning pads are sold separately, the burrs are replaceable. In café use, wiper blades are changed roughly monthly, at home rarely. The construction itself is designed for generations.
Can I see the EG-1 before buying?
Yes. In the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) the EG-1 is in daily use. Weight, running noise, cleaning and feel can't be conveyed through photos. Bringing your own beans is welcome.
How fast is the EG-1 delivered in Switzerland?
2 to 4 working days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zürich recommended. Financing via Heylight possible.
Where can I buy the Weber Workshops EG-1 in Switzerland?
At Coffee Coaching Club, as the exclusive Swiss importer of Weber Workshops. We carry the entire range including accessories and spare parts. Order via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours, or in the showrooms in Bern and Zürich.
Roastery tip
We've been using the EG-1 in our showroom and in the roastery for years. What we keep noticing: on the EG-1, the character of the bean shows especially clearly. Our Wild Peach at around 900 RPM with the CORE burrs — the peach note stands out more clearly, the acidity separates cleanly, the finish gets longer. Cozy Chocolate at 1200 to 1300 RPM develops a dense chocolate depth, with the 80mm character giving a bit more clarity than smaller grinders. Nutty Delight is a reliable companion on the EG-1. Anyone wanting to experiment with the ULTRA Burrs: light-roasted coffee gains an extra fruity layer with them, one that stays more subtle with CORE. That's our recommendation, one of many.
