Coffee grinder for beginners: single dose or grind by weight
The soft whirr, a warm aroma rising from the spout and freshly ground coffee trickling into the dosing cup: the nicest moment of the morning begins at the grinder. It stands next to your machine, in black, white or gleaming stainless steel, and completes your coffee corner. A good grinder is a luxury you treat yourself to every day, and every morning it gives you an espresso that tastes of your bean. So the nicest question to start with is: which grinder should stand next to your machine?
In short: For getting started, we recommend an electric single-dose or grind-by-weight grinder with a finely adjustable grind size. Single dose is a ritual: you weigh out the beans for every espresso, and because nothing stays in the grinder, you switch from bean to bean. Grind by weight is absolute convenience and consistency: the grinder grinds to the gram by itself. Both suit espresso by weight. The grinder shapes the cup at least as much as the machine, so here too you can treat yourself to something beautiful right from the start. That is how we advise at Coffee Coaching Club.
Why the grinder makes so much of the flavour
Your espresso holds what the grinder makes of the bean. It decides how fine the ground coffee becomes, and how even. The more even the particles, the more evenly the water dissolves the aromas, and the espresso turns sweet, round and clear.
Grind size is your nicest dial. If you want the espresso fuller and sweeter, set the grinder a touch finer; if you want it lighter, a touch coarser. Ground coffee and espresso go on the scale, because we brew espresso by weight. That way you always know exactly what you are enjoying, and every espresso takes you further.
And just like a machine, you buy a grinder for many years. If you think long term, you go straight for the grinder that makes you happy every morning.
Single dose: the ritual
Single dose is a ritual. You weigh out the beans for your espresso, hear them trickle into the grinder, and it grinds the whole dose fresh. Every dose smells like the first.
Because nothing stays in the grinder, you switch from bean to bean whenever you feel like it: a chocolatey espresso in the morning, a filter coffee or a decaf in the afternoon, without having to purge the grinder first. Every cup tastes of exactly the bean you chose.
A drop of water on the beans before grinding keeps the ground coffee nicely together; more in RDT when grinding. In small tubes, from Weber Workshops or Normcore for example, your beans wait ready in single doses.
You will find single-dose grinders from Varia, Weber Workshops, Option-O, Mahlkönig, Eureka and Mazzer, for example, and all models among the single-dose coffee grinders. We are the exclusive importer of Varia and Weber Workshops in Switzerland.
Grind by weight: absolute convenience
Grind by weight is absolute convenience and consistency. There is a scale built into the grinder: you set how many grams of ground coffee you want, and the grinder grinds exactly that much, straight into the portafilter. The beans wait in the hopper, one press of a button is all it takes, and every espresso matches the next. That is wonderful if you make several espressos or cappuccinos every day, like to stay with your favourite bean or if several people in your household make coffee.
Grind-by-weight grinders are made by Mahlkönig, Eureka and Mazzer, among others; you will find all models among the grind-by-weight grinders.
At a glance
| Approach | How it feels | The beans | Right for you if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single dose | a ritual, every dose freshly weighed out | from bean to bean, decaf too, nothing stays in the grinder | you love the ritual and like switching between beans, espresso and filter |
| Grind by weight | absolute convenience, one press of a button | ready in the hopper, every espresso consistent | you want to be ready quickly every morning and love consistency |
Conical or flat: how the burrs taste
At the heart of every grinder, two burrs work together, either cone-shaped and set one inside the other, or flat and parallel. In our experience, conical burrs bring more aroma, and the larger the conical burr set, the more body. Flat burrs bring more clarity to the aromas, and the larger the flat burrs, the more clearly that clarity comes through. Then there is the speed: the higher the RPM, the more body; the lower, the less. Which character you like is a matter of taste. We explain what lies behind body and mouthfeel in bimodal vs. unimodal particle distribution.
Grinder and machine as a pair
With the grinder, too, start with the look: should it match the colour of your machine, gleam in stainless steel or add a warm touch with wood? When machine and grinder belong together, your coffee corner looks all of a piece. If you buy a new machine and a new grinder together, we add up to CHF 150 in shop credit* with the bundle bonus.
Our guide espresso machine for beginners shows which machine suits you. Our grinder advisor asks about taste and everyday life and suggests grinders that suit you, and Jackson, our AI advisor, answers your questions around the clock. You will find a direct comparison of both approaches in grind by weight vs. single dosing. If you love the ritual entirely by hand, a hand grinder is single dose in its most original sense; more in hand grinder or electric grinder.

In Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich Oerlikon at Hagenholzstrasse 50b, many grinders are set up and in operation, and in the café they grind coffee for our guests all day long. If you would like to test several grinders side by side, there is the espresso machine and grinder comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Which coffee grinder is good for beginners?
An electric single-dose or grind-by-weight grinder with a finely adjustable grind size. Single dose is a ritual: you weigh out every dose and grind it fresh. Grind by weight is absolute convenience and consistency: the grinder grinds to the gram by itself. Both suit espresso by weight and make getting started easy.
Single dose or grind by weight – which suits me?
Single dose suits you if you love the ritual. Because nothing stays in the grinder, you switch from bean to bean whenever you feel like it, including to a filter coffee or a decaf in the afternoon. Grind by weight suits you if you are looking for absolute convenience and consistency: one press of a button, and every espresso matches the next. Both paths lead to wonderful espresso.
How important is the grinder compared with the machine?
The grinder shapes the cup at least as much as the machine. It decides how fine and how even the ground coffee becomes, and with that, how sweet and round the espresso tastes. That is why it belongs in your coffee corner from the start.
How do flat and conical burrs taste?
In our experience, conical burrs bring more aroma, and the larger the conical burr set, the more body. Flat burrs bring more clarity to the aromas, and the larger the flat burrs, the more clearly that clarity comes through. Then there is the speed: the higher the RPM, the more body; the lower, the less. Which character you like is a matter of taste.
Is a scale part of the setup?
Yes, we brew espresso by weight. With single dose you weigh the beans and the espresso in the cup; with grind by weight the grinder weighs the ground coffee itself, and the scale under the cup shows you the espresso. That way you always know exactly what you are enjoying.
Can I grind for espresso and filter coffee with the same grinder?
Many single-dose grinders switch effortlessly between espresso and filter: because nothing stays in the grinder, you change the bean in seconds and fine-tune the grind size. Grind-by-weight grinders are usually designed entirely for espresso.
Is there a bonus if I buy machine and grinder together?
Yes. If you buy a new machine and a new grinder together, we add up to CHF 150 in shop credit with the bundle bonus.
Roastery tip: For the first few weeks at your new grinder, chocolatey-nutty coffees such as Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight are loyal companions: round, sweet and grateful. If you grind single dose, a light, fruity coffee such as Wild Peach is waiting for you in between, and switching takes only seconds. You can see which bean suits your espresso in coffee beans for espresso machines. That is our recommendation, one of many.
* Bundle bonus: when you buy a new espresso machine and a new coffee grinder in one order paid by advance payment; amount depending on the purchase value; valid for 60 days. You will find all the conditions on the bundle bonus page.
