Normcore Heavy Coffee Tamper

523 grams in your hand. You lift it, feel the weight, place it on the puck. You don't press – you let the mass do the work. A quiet suction, the base finds its place, the powder compacts. No clicking, no spring. Just what you yourself provide, reflected by the tool.

Heavy, because honest

The Heavy Coffee Tamper is the answer to the other tamper question: not "how do I eliminate the human variable," but "how do I better play with it." There's no spring mechanism here, no click feedback, no pre-calibrated force. Here there's mass – 523 grams of anodized aluminum and 304 stainless steel – and your hand.

There's a good reason for this: those who want to feel the pressure when tamping will feel it much more clearly with a heavy tamper. The tool compacts the puck with its own weight; you only add what you deem appropriate. Over time, you develop a feel for it – this is the learning process that a pressure-regulated tamper consciously shortens. Both have their justification. It's a matter of personality, not technique.

The wave design on the base is the second peculiarity. Instead of a flat surface, the tamper bases have slight waves that create a small indentation in the puck. This allows water to flow more evenly through the bed – less channeling, fewer donut extractions. It sounds like a detail, but it's noticeable.

The bases are interchangeable. The set includes two rings of different heights, which you can use to adjust the fit to your portafilter basket. Those who like to experiment can also use other Normcore tamper bases.

Our observation: The Heavy Tamper isn't necessarily more precise than a pressure-regulated one – but it's more honest. You feel what you're doing. Some like that, some don't. Both are legitimate. Our opinion, one of many.

Who this tamper is for

For everyone who wants to feel more when tamping – the hand, the weight, the feedback from the puck. For everyone who is looking for a tool that adapts to them over time, because they have made it fit them. Also for those who simply appreciate the attachment of heavy, well-made tools.

Those who want consistency without a learning curve are better served with the pressure-regulated tamper or the Titan PVD variant. Both are different paths to the same goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference to the pressure-regulated tamper?

The Heavy Tamper has no spring – it uses its own weight (523 g) and your hand to compact the puck. This gives more control, but also more responsibility: you feel whether the pressure is right. The pressure-regulated tamper removes this variable and delivers reproducible force. Both arrive at the puck, just via different routes.

What's the benefit of the wave base design?

Instead of a flat surface, the base has slight waves. These create a small indentation in the puck, through which water flows more evenly. This reduces channeling and donut extractions. If you want a classic flat base, you can swap the base separately from Normcore.

Which tamper size fits my machine?

53.3 mm for Breville/Sage with 54-mm portafilter. 58.5 mm for standard machines with 58-mm portafilter (La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, commercial). If unsure: write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch with your machine model, we'll reply during business hours.

What are the two included rings for?

They adjust the effective height of the tamper to your basket. Depending on the amount of beans and grind size, the tamper sits at different depths in the basket – the rings give you leeway without having to change the tamper itself.

Can I see the tamper before buying?

Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Online ordering is the primary method, with delivery throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2–4 business days.

Roastery Tip: Heavy tampers give you the best feel for full-bodied roasts where density and sweetness are paramount. Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight are our top recommendations. If you're looking for maximum body without acidity: Very Nutty. For fruity discoveries: Wild Peach. But this is our recommendation – try what appeals to you.
