You place the dose in the funnel, press the button. The brushless motor starts up, quietly, almost incidentally. You hear nothing sharp, no screeching, just a deep hum. The 80mm CORE burrs operate at the RPM you set – 900, 1200, 1800, depending on the bean and roast. The ground coffee falls into the shaker, which you shake briefly: the coffee grounds distribute homogenously. You place it on the portafilter, turn it over. Puck. Clean. The same every morning. You look forward to the morning.
Since 2015, the Weber Workshops EG-1 has been the grinder against which others are measured. Douglas Weber, who worked as a product designer at Apple for over a decade – including on the original iPod team – before founding Weber Workshops in 2014, designed it as a single-dose espresso grinder for home and cafe use, with the explicit aim that it would be used for decades. In the current Mk.3 version with 80mm CORE burrs (magnetically mounted, tool-free changeable), variable speed from 500 to 1800 RPM, PID-controlled motor for constant RPM, and retention under 0.1g. Coffee Coaching Club is the exclusive Swiss importer of Weber Workshops and carries the entire range including accessories and spare parts.
The EG-1 grinds with 80mm CORE burrs. This is not a numbers game – the size determines the particle distribution. Smaller burrs (48mm, 54mm, 64mm) typically produce a larger proportion of very fine particles (fines) alongside the main particles. This is a bimodal distribution that creates body, crema, and a certain sweetness in espresso.
80mm flat burrs work differently. The particle distribution is narrower, and the proportion of fines is lower. What becomes noticeable in the cup: more clarity, more defined aroma separation, cleanly separated acidities. This does not mean that 80mm is automatically better – it means it produces a different result. Especially with lighter roasts and filter coffee crossovers, the difference is clear. Our observation after years of EG-1 in the showroom: those who want to hear the nuances of their bean will find more of them on the EG-1. This is one perspective, among many.
The current EG-1 is the third main generation. CORE (DB-1) burrs are the standard burr set of the Mk.3 and replace the earlier BASE (DB-3) burrs – developed by Weber specifically for a balanced character between clarity and body. For those who want even more specific profiles: the ULTRA (DB-2) burrs (sold separately, manufactured by SSP for Weber) are optimized for clear, low-fines cups for pour-over and filter.
Variable speed from 500 to 1800 RPM – adjustable in real-time during grinding. Lower RPM (around 800) tends to produce fewer fines and more clarity, higher RPM (around 1300) more body and texture. You can grind the same coffee in different ways without changing the grinder. The PID-controlled motor detects bean resistance and adjusts torque in real-time to maintain the set RPM even with hard beans. New in the Mk.3: a dedicated Purge button in the middle of the RPM dial, which briefly runs the burrs backwards and then at maximum speed – to dislodge foreign objects or stuck beans and flush out any remaining coffee grounds.
The lid of the EG-1 is held magnetically. You lift it off, the upper burr is also magnetically held and can be removed without tools. Within 20 seconds, the grinding chamber is cleaned, and everything is back in place. This sounds like a small detail – but anyone who uses a grinder daily knows how much simple cleaning is worth in everyday life.
The Blind Shaker is a Weber in-house development, now used by barista world champions worldwide. A magnetically mounted collection cup with a special lid that homogenizes the grinds by briefly shaking. The oak plate under the grinder precisely positions the shaker so that it stands exactly where it should during grinding.

The EG-1 is suitable for anyone looking for a grinder for the next ten to twenty years and who wants a tool for precisely that time span. All those who consciously work with single-dosing at home and want to switch between different beans without rinsing. Cafes and roasteries that want a grinder for competitive use or for the bar.
The EG-1 is not for everyone. If you are looking for an all-round grinder for different brewing methods, you will find a good choice at a significantly lower price with Varia (exclusive Swiss importer). If you are looking for 80mm precision with more modern features, the Option-O Lagom P80 is a younger alternative. If you want to optimize specifically for light roasts, check out the Option-O Lagom 01. A detailed comparison of endgame options is available on the page EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.
The EG-1 remains the icon. The grinder with which Weber Workshops has shown that grinding at home can achieve the same quality as at the bar. If you want the haptic detail, the longevity, and the watchmaker-level craftsmanship, with the EG-1 you have something that still feels good even after years. Those who want it know why.
The Weber Workshops EG-1 can be ordered directly in the webshop. Delivery throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2 to 4 working days. For a grinder of this size, we recommend Click and Collect in Bern, Gerberngasse 44 or Zurich, Hagenholzstrasse 50b. There, the EG-1 is in daily use – you can see the weight, the responsiveness, the smooth running, and the cleaning yourself. Financing via Heylight is possible.
We have had the EG-1 in our showroom and roastery for years. If you have any questions before purchasing, about burr selection, or alternative burrs, you can reach us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch or by phone during business hours.
The EG-1 unfolds its potential with thermally stable espresso machines. The La Marzocco Linea Mini R with a saturated group head is the classic combination – both devices focus on stability and precision. The La Marzocco Linea Micra or the GS3 are also strong partners. For manual lever extraction: Flair Espresso 58+2 – the precision of the EG-1 comes into its own with manual pressure building.
For brew-by-weight on the La Marzocco Mini R, the Acaia Lunar (Swiss importer) is suitable. For a standalone espresso scale with app and flow rate display, also the Acaia Lunar. For puck prep: the Weber Workshops Moonraker or as a more affordable option the Normcore WDT Tool (exclusive Swiss importer). For airtight bean storage: Airscape. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs Mineral Concentrates (exclusive Swiss importer).
Larger burrs produce a narrower particle distribution with fewer fines for the same dose. This tends to lead to more clarity and more defined aroma separation in the cup – especially noticeable with light roasts and filter coffee. 48mm or 64mm burrs, on the other hand, produce more fines and thus more body and crema. Both have their justification – the EG-1 specializes in clarity.
Yes. The CORE (DB-1) burrs are magnetically mounted and can be changed in under two minutes without tools. Official Weber alternative: the ULTRA (DB-2), manufactured by SSP, for clear cups for filter. One grinder, multiple characteristics.
Yes. The grind adjustment covers the complete range from espresso to coarse for French Press. With the CORE burrs, it works as an all-rounder; with the ULTRA burrs, it is particularly exciting for filter coffee and light roasts. If you are looking for a pure filter coffee specialist, the Timemore Sculptor 078 is a focused alternative.
Quiet. The brushless motor operates without the high screeching of cheaper grinders, and the aluminum housing dampens vibrations. In our showroom, the EG-1 is in continuous use without disturbing conversations.
Weber Workshops builds with the explicit claim that the EG-1 will be used for decades. Wear parts such as wiper blades and cleaning pads are sold separately, the burrs are replaceable. In cafe use, wiper blades are changed about monthly, rarely at home. The construction itself is designed to last for generations.
Yes. In the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), the EG-1 is in daily use. Weight, running noise, cleaning, and haptics cannot be conveyed through photos. Bringing your own beans is welcome.
2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zurich recommended. Financing via Heylight possible.

We have been using the EG-1 in our showroom and roastery for years. What we repeatedly observe: On the EG-1, the character of the bean is particularly evident. Our Wild Peach at about 900 RPM with the CORE burrs – the peach note is clearer, the acidity separates cleanly, the finish becomes longer. Cozy Chocolate at 1200 to 1300 RPM develops a dense chocolate depth, with the 80mm characteristic providing a bit more clarity than smaller grinders. Nutty Delight is a reliable companion on the EG-1. For those who want to experiment with the ULTRA burrs: light roasted coffee gets an additional fruity layer that remains more subtle with CORE. This is our recommendation, one of many.
