Buy a coffee machine: Find your setup for your best coffee

A coffee machine is more than a kitchen appliance. It's part of your morning, your ritual, your home. Before you think about specifications, ask yourself a different question: What kind of coffee moment do you want to have? The only thing that matters in the end: The coffee must taste good to you. Everything else is secondary.

What you read here is our perspective as a coffee roastery. We roast ourselves, we use the machines daily, we advise from our own experience. But our opinion is one of many in the coffee world. Every path to good coffee is valid.

Why buy from us?

The Coffee Coaching Club is a coffee roastery with showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). We are not just retailers. We roast our own coffee beans, run cafés, and use the machines and grinders we sell ourselves every day. If we recommend something to you, it's because we know it, not because it's in a catalog.

For numerous brands, we are the exclusive Swiss importer, including Flair Espresso, Weber Workshops, Varia, Normcore, Acaia and Subminimal. Additionally, we carry La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Arkel, Profitec and many more brands.

What kind of coffee person are you?

There is no right or wrong way. There is only your way. Here are some pointers that can help you.

You love the ritual. You want to have every step in your own hands. Grinding, tamping, pulling. For you, the process is just as important as the result in the cup. Manual machines from Flair Espresso offer exactly that: a conscious, unhurried experience where you control the pressure with your hand. No electricity, no noise, just you and the bean.

You want comfort and reliability. In the morning, it just has to work. Machine on, espresso out, good. Machines from Profitec, ECM or Rocket deliver exactly that: proven technology, solid craftsmanship, reliable day after day. Espresso and cappuccino without headaches.

You want the sensory maximum. You want the full aroma spectrum of your beans in the cup. Refined, multi-layered, complex. Machines with a saturated brew group from La Marzocco or Arkel deliver an aroma profile that we perceive as particularly refined and aromatic. The thermal stability of these brew groups allows for an even extraction that reveals nuances that might be lost in other systems. This is our observation. To find out if you perceive the difference in the same way, the best thing to do is to visit the showroom.

You just want a beautiful machine. One that sits in your kitchen and makes you happy even before you drink the first coffee. This is also a perfectly good reason. Design and haptics influence how you experience coffee even before the first drop falls into the cup.

The grinder is just as important

Freshly ground coffee changes everything. Pre-ground coffee loses most of its aromas within minutes. Your own coffee grinder is therefore not optional, but part of the setup.

Our honest recommendation: Spend at least as much on the grinder as on the machine, if not more. This is our experience, not a law. Others prioritize differently, and that can also lead to the goal.

Hand grinders from Comandante, Timemore or Varia deliver excellent grind quality and make the grinding process part of the ritual. Electric grinders from Eureka, Mazzer, Fiorenzato or Mahlkönig offer convenience at the touch of a button. Those who are passionate about design and sensory experience will find grinders from Option-O and Weber Workshops that are both precision instruments and design objects.

Our consultation tool helps you find the right combination of machine and grinder.

Single boiler, heat exchanger, dual boiler: What does that mean?

These terms describe how the machine heats its water. This affects the workflow, but it says little about whether you'll like the coffee in the end.

A single boiler has one boiler. You switch between brewing and steaming. A heat exchanger allows simultaneous brewing and steaming. A dual boiler has two separate heating systems for maximum temperature control. None of these systems is better or worse. They are different and suit different daily routines.

What influences the taste more than the heating system is the brew group. A saturated brew group, as used by La Marzocco and Arkel, delivers a result that we perceive as more refined and aromatic than that of a classic E61 brew group, regardless of whether the E61 is installed in a single boiler, heat exchanger, or dual boiler. But this is our perspective. Others see it differently, and that is just as valid. Read more in our deep dive on heating systems and our brew group comparison.

Great coffee in every price range

There is no minimum amount for good coffee. And the most expensive setup is not automatically the best for you. Each of the following methods delivers great espresso if you enjoy the process.

A manual machine from Flair Espresso with a hand grinder from Comandante or Varia is conscious, artisanal, unhurried. A machine from Profitec, ECM or Rocket with an electric grinder from Eureka or Fiorenzato brings daily consistency and comfort. A machine from La Marzocco or Arkel with a grinder from Option-O or Weber Workshops offers maximum sensory control and equipment that is also a design object.

Each of these paths is equally valid. What matters is not the price, but whether the coffee tastes good to you and the process brings you joy.
