The handle sits heavy in your hand, turns in, locks – and for the next twenty-five seconds everything depends on this one piece of brass. This complete portafilter for the Rocket Appartamento TCA comes with basket and spring, so it is ready to use straight away.

A portafilter is not a wear part in the strict sense; it lasts a long time. But it works hard: it gets locked in, knocked out, rinsed, and now and then it falls onto the drip tray. At some point the handle comes loose, the basket is worn out, or the spout keeps dripping. And a second portafilter to alternate with is simply convenient – it is warm while the first one is still in the knock box.

Descale first, then replace

Before you order a complete portafilter: if the basket sits firmly but the shot runs slowly and unevenly, this is usually down to limescale and coffee oils in the basket, not the portafilter. A cycle with cleaning powder and, depending on your water, descaling the machine often achieve more than a new part. You will find everything you need in our machine and grinder cleaning collection. Only when the handle, bayonet or spout are mechanically worn out is a replacement worthwhile.

When it is due

When the handle twists relative to the portafilter or has noticeable play. When the portafilter no longer locks cleanly into the bayonet or turns noticeably further than it used to. When the spout is bent or keeps dripping long after the shot has finished. And when the basket is worn at the edges so that the spring can no longer hold it – then a complete portafilter is often the calmer route than hunting down the individual parts.
