MOTTA Tamper flat "9BAR" 58 mm – stainless steel flat base, made in Italy

The handle carries the "9BAR" motif – the pressure at which espresso is made. You place the tamper, press straight down, and the puck becomes level and firm.

The flat tamper with a printed aluminum handle in the "9BAR" motif.

What makes this tamper

The flat stainless steel base compresses the coffee grounds evenly, so water flows through the puck consistently instead of finding a quick path through. The high rim of about two centimeters sits centered on the 58 mm portafilter without slipping when you press, and the handle unscrews for cleaning. The tamper is made in Italy – Metallurgica Motta has been building tools like this since 1967.

An even compaction is the basis for an even extraction – and that, in turn, for a drink that tastes good. Which look you hold in your hand is a matter of taste: the function is the same across every version, the design is yours to choose. Nobody needs a particular pattern – you want it, or you don't. Our opinion is one of many.

Who it's for

For everyone with a 58 mm portafilter who wants to compact the grounds evenly – and likes deciding for themselves which look sits on the counter. The flat base is the classic choice for even compaction.

What to pair it with

The tamper is part of the puck before extraction: ground evenly in our coffee grinders, extracted on your espresso machine. Our advisory tool helps with the choice.

If you like comparing tampers and accessories: affordable and precise is the Normcore Collection, while the Weber Workshops Collection shows the especially finely crafted side. You'll find more models in our Tamper Collection.

Frequently asked questions

What portafilter size does the tamper fit?

For 58 mm portafilters. The high rim sits centered and doesn't slip when you press.

What material is the handle made of?

The handle is aluminum with a "9BAR" print, the base is stainless steel. The handle unscrews for cleaning.

Flat or convex – what's the difference?

A flat base compacts the grounds evenly, a convex one more toward the center. There's no right or wrong – many prefer the flat base for even compaction. In the end, what counts is that the cup tastes good.

Can I see the tamper in person before buying?

Gladly. You can experience it live in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Online, we deliver in 2–4 business days, throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein.

A tip from our coffee roastery

An evenly tamped puck deserves full-bodied beans. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring chocolate and nut notes. For maximum body without acidity, the Very Nutty, for a fruity experience, the Wild Peach. That's our recommendation – one of many.
