MOTTA Flat Tamper "Wood" 58 mm – Stainless Steel Flat Base, Made in Italy

Warm brown wood rests calmly in your hand, and with one straight press the flat base settles evenly onto the puck. Nature meets precision tool.

The flat tamper "Wood" with a brown wooden handle.

What makes this tamper

The flat stainless steel base compresses the ground coffee evenly, so water flows through the puck consistently instead of finding a quick path around it. The high rim of around two centimetres centres itself on the 58 mm portafilter without slipping as you press, and the handle unscrews for cleaning. The tamper is made in Italy – Metallurgica Motta has been building tools like this since 1967.

An even tamp is the foundation for a consistent extraction – and that, in turn, is the foundation for a drink that tastes good. Which look you hold in your hand is a matter of taste: the function stays the same across every variant, the design is yours to choose. Nobody needs a particular pattern – you want it, or you don't. Our opinion is one among many.

Who it's for

For everyone with a 58 mm portafilter who wants to tamp their ground coffee evenly – and likes deciding for themselves which look sits on the counter. The flat base is the classic choice for even compression.

What to pair it with

The tamper is part of the puck before the shot: even grinding happens in our coffee grinders, pulled on your espresso machine. Our advisory tool helps with the choice.

If you like comparing tampers and accessories: affordable and precise is the Normcore Collection, while the Weber Workshops Collection shows the especially finely crafted side, with more models in our Tamper Collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which portafilter size does the tamper fit?

For 58 mm portafilters. The high rim centres itself and doesn't slip while pressing.

What material is the handle made of?

The handle is made of brown wood, the base of stainless steel. Wooden handles are best wiped down with a damp cloth rather than soaked in water.

Flat or convex – what's the difference?

A flat base compresses the grounds evenly, a convex one compresses more towards the centre. There's no right or wrong here – many prefer the flat base for even compression. In the end, what matters is that the cup tastes good.

Can I see the tamper in person before buying?

Of course. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can experience it live. Online, we deliver within 2–4 business days, across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein.

A tip from our coffee roastery

An evenly tamped puck deserves full-bodied beans. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring chocolate and nutty notes. For maximum body without any acidity, the Very Nutty, for a fruity experience, the Wild Peach. That's our recommendation – one among many.
