Italian espresso grinders
Buy Italian Espresso Grinders in Switzerland – from Eureka to Ceado
While Italy's espresso machine tradition has been documented since 1901, the Italian grinder industry has developed independently. Eureka was founded in Florence in 1920, Mazzer in Venice in 1947, and Anfim in 1932 as a supplier to Italian espresso machine manufacturers. These brands have shaped the standard repertoire of café grinders over decades – and are now also the first choice for most demanding home setups.
What characterizes an Italian grinder: solid construction, often full-metal casing, high-quality steel or titanium burrs, classic operating concepts. Italian grinders are rarely the most innovative – but they are the most reliable. A Mazzer grinder has been running in coffee bars since the 1970s with available spare parts, and a Eureka Mignon can be found in every second European specialty coffee home. Coffee Coaching Club carries 51 active Italian grinder models from ten brands.

What goes with it
For machines: Italian espresso machines (Bezzera, Lelit, Rocket, Quick Mill, La Marzocco) are the natural companions – an Italian grinder plus an Italian machine is a classic combination. Italian grinders also go well with German espresso machines (ECM, Profitec). For tools: Normcore WDT and Leveler, Tamper Collection, Dosing Funnel. For complementary premium scales: Acaia Lunar or Pearl – even with Grind-by-Weight grinders, an additional external scale can be useful for weighing shots. For precision baskets: IMS Baristapro Nanotech. For cleaning: Grinder Cleaning Collection with Urnex Grindz and Cafiza. For bean containers: Airscape. For beans from our own roastery: CCC House Roasts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Eureka Mignon Specialita or Mazzer Mini G?
Eureka Mignon Specialita (CHF 497–577): more compact, quieter, with touch display and timer dosing, 55mm flat burr grinder. Mazzer Mini G (CHF 1,149): more robustly built, 64mm flat burr grinder with Grind-by-Weight, long café tradition. Mazzer Mini G is a significant class improvement over Mignon, but also costs twice as much.
What does "Single Dosing" mean?
You feed the grinder with exactly the amount of beans you need for each shot (e.g., 18g for a double espresso) instead of using a storage hopper above the grinder. Advantages: fresh grounds per shot, possibility to use several bean varieties in parallel. Disadvantages: minimally slower per shot. Ceado E37Z, Eureka Mignon Single Dose, and Mazzer Philos are the specialized single-dose grinders from Italy.
What is DLC coating on burrs?
Diamond-Like Carbon – a very hard, low-friction coating. The burrs last longer, the ground coffee is heated less (which preserves aromas), and retention is reduced. Used in Ceado E37Z models, some Mazzer premium variants, and selected Eureka models.
Which Italian grinder is the quietest?
The Eureka Mignon series with Silent-Range technology. At normal operating volume, it measures about 40–45 dB – which is significantly quieter than typical café grinders (60–70 dB). Important in open-plan living-kitchens or early in the morning when others are still sleeping.
What is the difference between Mignon Libra and Mignon Single Dose?
Both are Eureka Mignon Premium variants. Mignon Libra (CHF 748–798) has Grind-by-Weight – the grinder automatically grinds until the set gram amount is reached. Mignon Single Dose Grinder 65 (CHF 597) has 65mm burrs and is optimized for single-dosing workflow (no hopper). Different workflows, both are top home grinders.
Which Mazzer grinder for a café?
For home and bistro: Mazzer Mini G. For café volume (300+ shots/day): classic Mazzer Super Jolly, Major, or Robur (with conical 83mm burrs). These professional models are not in the current CCC range but can be ordered from us on request. For specialty café setup with single-dosing: Mazzer Philos.
How often should I replace the burrs?
For home use (1–2 shots per day), typically after 5–7 years; for café use, significantly more often (300–500 kg of bean throughput per set). Burrs can usually be replaced for under CHF 100 – a significant advantage of Italian grinders over inexpensive no-name devices.
What is Grind-by-Weight (GBW)?
The grinder has an integrated scale and stops automatically once the set gram amount is reached. Advantages: no external scale necessary, less dosing effort, more consistent shot size. In the Italian cluster: Eureka Mignon Libra (CHF 748–798), Eureka Atom W 65 Casa (CHF 999), Eureka Atom 65W/75W (CHF 1,398–1,798), Mazzer Mini G (CHF 1,149), Fiorenzato AllGround Sense Plus (CHF 899) and F64 EVO Sense PRO (CHF 1,949), Ligre siji (CHF 1,369).
Can I test Italian grinders before buying?
Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. Direct comparison with your desired bean through different grinders – this is the best way to truly feel the difference between a Eureka Mignon and a Mazzer Mini. Please arrange an appointment in advance.
