Option-O Lagom P80 – 80mm flat burr single-dose espresso grinder with PCS

18 grams go into the hopper. The auger takes hold of the beans and guides them slowly toward the crusher – the Pre-Crushing System breaks them down before they reach the actual burrs. Only then do the 80mm Mizen Blind Burrs come into play, spinning at the RPM setting chosen, grinding coffee that feels different from what you know: more homogeneous, cleaner, without clumps. The knocker clears the chamber at the end, the auto-off stops the motor as soon as the torque drops. Dynamic retention under 0.1 grams. Switch beans tomorrow, and nothing from today's is left behind.

The Lagom P80 is the newest grinder from Option-O in Sydney, Australia – introduced in October 2025, shipping since March 2026. It's the consistent successor to the Lagom P64: same single-dose philosophy, same form language, but every component inside redeveloped. The central difference from other 80mm grinders: the Pre-Crushing System. The beans are broken down before the main grinding pass, which measurably evens out particle distribution and takes load off the motor. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of Option-O in Switzerland.

The Pre-Crushing System

In classic grinding, whole beans hit the rotating burrs directly. The bean is broken apart in a fraction of a second – with heat buildup, uneven load on the burrs, and a particle distribution that scatters more than it needs to. The P80's PCS adds a step before that: an integrated pre-crusher within the burrs themselves breaks the bean into several larger fragments. These fragments then enter the main grinding chamber more evenly and in a more controlled way.

What that brings to the cup: tighter particle distribution, fewer extremes (both fines and boulders), more consistent extractions. The difference becomes tastable especially with light to medium roasts and dense beans – clarity without losing the sweetness. Our observation after months with the P80 in the showroom: it's especially exciting for modern espresso-light and filter brews. Anyone who prefers classic Italian espressos with a lot of body might find more texture on a grinder without PCS. That's our view, one among many.

Mizen 80OM Blind Burrs – one burr geometry for espresso and filter

The Mizen 80OM Blind Burrs are a further development of the well-known Mizen flat burrs. OM stands for Omni – suited to the entire brewing range from fine espresso to coarse cold brew. "Blind" refers to the mounting style: the burrs are held magnetically, without screws. That makes swapping them easier and eliminates the recesses around screw heads where coffee residue usually collects.

The P80 is compatible with 3-pin magnetic blind mount and with 2-screw mounting. That opens up the possibility of switching to alternative burr sets later – for anyone who wants to explore a different flavor direction someday without replacing the whole grinder.

RPM dial from 300 to 1700, brushless DC motor

The stepped RPM dial allows precise, repeatable settings between 300 and 1700 revolutions per minute. Lower RPM (around 400-600) tends to produce fewer fines and more clarity – good for light roasts and filter. Higher RPM (around 1200-1500) produces a bit more texture and can be pleasant with classic espresso blends. The exact setting is a matter of experimenting, and that's exactly what the stepped dial is built for: find your value and return to it precisely at any time.

The 500W brushless DC motor delivers industrial torque at a remarkably low noise level. Together with the heavy aluminum housing, this creates a grinder that doesn't audibly bog down even with dense beans and a fine grind. In the showroom, the P80 regularly runs in the background during tastings – conversation stays possible.

Who the Lagom P80 is for

The P80 suits home baristas and small cafés who work consistently single-dose and want a grinder that can cleanly handle both espresso and filter. Anyone who switches between light Nordic-style roasts, classic espressos, and the occasional pour-over will find a broad range of use in the 80OM omni geometry.

The P80 isn't for everyone. Anyone looking for a simpler, more affordable single-dose grinder will find an excellent choice in the Varia VS3 Gen2 or VS6 (exclusive Swiss importer). Anyone who wants the icon with the broadest community and alternative burr sets: Weber Workshops EG-1. Anyone specifically focused on modern light roasts and looking for the 102mm flagship dimension: Option-O Lagom 01. A dedicated comparison: EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.

The P80 is a grinder for everyone who knows the Lagom philosophy and wants to experience it in its next iteration – with PCS, magnetic burr mounting, and the versatility of the omni burrs. Whoever wants it knows why.

The P80 unfolds its potential with thermally stable espresso machines. La Marzocco Linea Micra or La Marzocco Linea Mini R with a saturated group are an obvious combination. For manual lever extraction: Flair Espresso 58+2. For pour-over setups: Weber Workshops BIRD as the premium option or Hario V60 as the classic choice.

For brew-by-weight with a software license on the La Marzocco, or as an espresso scale: Acaia Lunar. As an affordable alternative: Timemore Black Mirror. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs mineral concentrates (exclusive Swiss importer). For airtight bean storage: Airscape. Background on burrs, RPM, and particle distribution in our Sensory World.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Pre-Crushing System (PCS) of the Lagom P80 do?

The PCS breaks the beans into larger fragments before the main grinding pass. The auger feed moves the beans in a controlled way to the integrated pre-crusher before they reach the main burrs. The result is a tighter particle distribution with fewer extremes – measurable especially with light roasts and filter brews.

Is the P80 suitable for espresso and filter?

Yes. The Mizen 80OM burrs are omni burrs, deliberately developed for the entire brewing range. From very fine for espresso to coarse for cold brew, the stepless adjustment covers everything. The omni geometry shines especially with lighter roasts and modern espresso-light blends.

How loud is the Lagom P80?

Despite the 500W brushless DC motor and high torque, the P80 stays remarkably quiet. The heavy CNC aluminum housing dampens vibrations, and the motor runs without harsh frequencies. In the showroom, the grinder runs during tastings – conversation stays possible.

Can I change the burrs?

Yes. The P80 uses a magnetic blind burr mounting system that supports both 3-pin magnetic and 2-screw burrs. The swap requires almost no tools and is done in a few minutes. Rapid Zero Calibration with a safety zero limiter makes sure you're quickly back at your reference point after the change.

What's the difference from the Lagom P64?

The P80 shares the P64's form language but has completely redeveloped internals: 80mm burrs instead of 64mm, integrated PCS with auger feed, magnetic burr mounting, redesigned knocker, torque-sensing auto-off, stepped RPM dial from 300 to 1700 instead of stepless. The P64 remains an excellent grinder; the P80 is the current iteration with the newest Mizen concept.

How does the P80 differ from the Weber EG-1?

Both are 80mm flat burr grinders at flagship level, but with different philosophies. The EG-1 (since 2015) is the icon with a large community and many alternative burr sets. The P80 brings a newer concept with PCS and auger feed that narrows particle distribution even further. A detailed comparison is on our page EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.

Can I see the Lagom P80 before buying?

Yes. The P80 is on display in the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Bringing your own beans is explicitly welcome – that way you can experience the P80 directly with your reference bean.

How long does delivery take in Switzerland?

2 to 4 business days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect is possible anytime in Bern and Zürich. Shipping is free from an order value of CHF 60. Financing through Heylight is possible.

Where can I buy the Option-O Lagom P80 in Switzerland?

At Coffee Coaching Club, partner of Option-O. Via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours, or at the showrooms in Bern and Zürich.

Roastery tip

The P80 runs regularly in our showroom, and we observe how different beans respond to the 80OM omni geometry. Light roasts like our Wild Peach shine with a clear, well-defined aroma separation at around 500-700 RPM – fruity peaks, clean acidity. For Cozy Chocolate as espresso, testing between 1200 and 1500 RPM works well – the chocolate depth stays, with an added clarity in the middle that's often lost on smaller grinders. Nutty Delight is a reliable companion on the P80 at mid-range RPM. Anyone after maximum fruitiness with light single origins can experiment with lower RPM – the bean's character shows more clearly without losing sweetness. That's our recommendation, one among many.
