Normcore Pressure-Adjustable Tamper Titan PVD

The deep anthracite of the PVD coating. As you guide the tamper into the basket, the coffee grounds pull back – without sticking. A tool that no longer looks like a tool, but like an instrument.

Pressure-Adjustable with Titan PVD Coating

The mechanics are identical to the classic pressure-adjustable tamper: a central shaft, a self-levelling plate, three interchangeable springs (15 lb, 25 lb, 30 lb) for the calibrated force you choose. What's different sits on the surface.

The Titan PVD coating is applied to the stainless steel body in a vacuum process. The result is a layer harder than the steel underneath – markedly more scratch-resistant, more corrosion-resistant, and antistatic. This isn't marketing: coffee grounds that normally cling to a flat stainless steel surface release almost completely from a PVD surface. Less powder on the tool after the tamp, less cleaning, a cleaner workflow.

The deep anthracite is the visual result – not a coating in the sense of paint, but an atomically bonded surface. It looks like it isn't going anywhere. It isn't.

Our observation: the PVD tamper doesn't produce measurably better espresso than the standard version. But it stays beautiful longer. And it says something different on the counter. Both are legitimate. Our opinion, one of many.

Which Size for Which Machine

53.3 mm for Breville/Sage machines with 54 mm portafilters: Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser, Duo-Temp Pro.

58.5 mm for the vast majority – standard 58 mm portafilters from La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Bezzera (newer models), Lelit, commercial setups. Compatible with VST and IMS precision baskets.

For other sizes (45.5 / 49 / 51 / 51.5 / 57.5 mm), we carry the pressure-adjustable tamper in the stainless steel version.

Who This Tamper Is For

For everyone who wants both the consistency of a spring-loaded tamper and the look and feel of a PVD surface. For cafés where the tool sits in someone's hand a hundred times a day and should look the part. For home setups where every detail counts – not because it has to, but because it can.

For anyone who wants the same mechanism without paying extra for the coating: the standard tamper does functionally the same thing.

Pairs Well With

A Tamping Station keeps the portafilter steady. For every accessory around the puck – Puck Screen, WDT tool, distributor – you'll find the right piece in the Normcore range. We are the exclusive Swiss importer. Premium lovers will find at Weber Workshops the hand-milled alternative.

Grinder and machine complete the trio: Varia coffee grinders for affordable precision, Weber EG-1 or Option-O Lagom for maximum clarity. Find espresso machines in the advisory tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Titan PVD coating actually do?

Three measurable effects: hardness (markedly higher than stainless steel, more scratch-resistant in daily use), antistatic properties (coffee grounds stick less to the surface), and corrosion resistance (even with extended water contact). Visually, it delivers the deep anthracite that sets this version apart from the standard stainless steel one.

Does the PVD tamper tamp better than the standard one?

Functionally, the mechanism is identical – same springs, same levelling plate, same consistency. What the coating delivers shows up in the workflow: less sticking on the base means less wiping. In terms of taste, the espresso is indistinguishable.

Which tamper size fits my machine?

53.3 mm for Breville/Sage with a 54 mm portafilter. 58.5 mm for standard machines with a 58 mm portafilter (La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, commercial). Other sizes are available in the standard pressure-adjustable tamper. If unsure, write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch with your machine model, and we'll reply during business hours.

Which spring should I use?

The medium 25 lb spring comes pre-installed, and it works for most people. 15 lb for a fine grind and lighter roasts, 30 lb for stronger pressure and denser pucks. All three springs are included.

Can I see the tamper before buying?

Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Ordering online is the primary route, with delivery across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2–4 business days.

Roastery Tip: The PVD surface shows itself off best with dense, full-bodied roasts, since the grounds stick less to begin with. Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight are our recommendation for anyone looking for chocolate, nut, and caramel notes. Very Nutty for maximum body without acidity. Wild Peach for fruity discoveries. But that's our recommendation – discover what speaks to you.
