Buy Portafilters & Bottomless Portafilters Switzerland – 49 mm to 58 mm

The portafilter is the connecting piece between the brew group and the cup. The basket with the ground coffee sits in the portafilter, hot water flows through it, and the espresso runs from its spout into the cup. For specialty baristas, the Bottomless Portafilter (also called "Naked") is a diagnostic tool: without the spout covering, you can see how the espresso flows out of the basket – evenly (perfect distribution) or unevenly (channeling, uneven tamping).

Coffee Coaching Club carries around 40 active portafilter and bottomless portafilter models. Four standard sizes, many brands, both classic single/double spouts and bottomless designs. For home setups with standard machines, the manufacturers' standard portafilters are often sufficient. For specialty workflow, a bottomless 58 mm with a precision basket is the step to the next level.

Classic vs. Bottomless (Naked)

Classic Portafilter (single or double spout): the basket sits in the portafilter, the spout body below covers the basket. You only see the cup filling up. For standard workflow, simple workflow speed.

Bottomless / Naked: the portafilter body has an open hole at the bottom, through which you can directly see the basket. During extraction, you see the espresso dripping out of the basket. For specialty workflow:

  • Visual diagnosis: even drip (good distribution) vs. one-sided drip (channeling)
  • Pre-infusion observation: you see when the first drop appears
  • Hands-on feedback for tamping, WDT, grind adjustment

For specialty home setups, upgrading to a bottomless 58 mm is one of the cheapest and most noticeable workflow improvements.

What to consider when buying

  • Size: 49, 51, 54 or 58 mm – depending on your machine
  • Brew Group Type: E61 (standard for Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit) or manufacturer-specific (La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino, Gaggia, Sage). E61 portafilters are largely interchangeable between E61 machines, manufacturer-specific ones are not.
  • Basket: the portafilter often comes without a basket. For specialty workflow: choose a precision basket (IMS Baristapro Nanotech) in 58 mm size separately.
  • Spring Clip: Universal models often have a spring to hold the basket – some professional portafilters use E-clips or other fastenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What portafilter size does my machine have?

Standard overview: 58 mm for all E61 machines (Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, Quick Mill), for La Marzocco (Linea Mini R, GS3, Linea Classic), Victoria Arduino, Slayer. 54 mm for Sage and Breville. 51 mm for DeLonghi (Dedica, La Specialista) and Smeg. 49 mm for Olympia Cremina and La Pavoni. For your specific machine: just ask.

What is the difference between bottomless and classic portafilters?

Classic (single or double spout): closed bottom with spouts. Espresso flows through the spouts into the cup, you only see the cup. Bottomless / Naked: open bottom, you see the basket directly from below and can observe the extraction during brewing. The more precise tool for diagnosis and specialty workflow.

Which bottomless 58 mm for E61 machines?

Several options depending on budget: Universal Bottomless (CHF 45, accessible), Rocket Bottomless incl. Double Basket (CHF 49, workflow-ready), Normcore Premium 58 mm (CHF 69), Bezzera E61 Bottomless Rosewood (CHF 98, strong design), Normcore Bottomless Titanium (CHF 98), Specht Design Pesado (CHF 189, Premium).

Do I need a separate portafilter if my machine already has one?

If your machine has a classic portafilter with a spout and you want to get into specialty workflow: yes, a bottomless 58 mm makes sense. If you only pull classic espresso: not necessary, the original portafilter is sufficient.

What are the La Marzocco Multi-Portafilters 3-in-1?

Special portafilters for the La Marzocco Linea Micra and Mini R, allowing you to switch between single spout, double spout, and bottomless depending on the extraction. CHF 144. A flexible tool for La Marzocco home setups.

What is the Normcore Unibody with High Extraction Basket?

Premium Normcore variant: the portafilter body has the basket permanently integrated (unibody design). The basket is a "High Extraction Basket," optimized for maximum extraction efficiency. For specialty demands that go beyond standard bottomless. CHF 174.

Are baskets included in the portafilter?

Varies. Rocket, La Marzocco, Bezzera, Universal: often with a standard basket. Normcore, Specht Design, Weber Workshops: often without a basket (you choose the appropriate precision basket separately, e.g., IMS Baristapro Nanotech). Check before buying or ask.

Can I test portafilters before buying?

Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. Main models from Normcore, Bezzera, La Marzocco, Rocket, Specht Design on site. You can feel the weight, handle feel, and design. Please arrange an appointment in advance.
